. *GUILLIAN BARRE SYNDROME (GBS)🧠🩺*
*DESCRIPTION*
🫴Guillian Barre Syndrome (GBS) is an autoimmune polyradiculopathy that is precipitated by an infection, viral or other.
🫴 It is a notifiable disease that is a common acquired polyneuropathy in children. GBS has many
variants, the most common in children are:
• Acute Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP) 80-90%
• Acute Motor Axonal Neuropathy (AMAN)
• Miller fisher Variant
*SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS*
• Symmetrical, ascending motor weakness
• Areflexia, i.e. absence of tendon reflexes
• Distal sensory alteration
• Pain/paraesthesia
• External ophthalmoplegia, sensory ataxia, weakness with Areflexia 🫴– Miller fischer variant
• Ascending flaccid symmetrical weakness, which usually is proceeded by a non-specific infection (e.g. upper respiratory infection or acute diarrhoeal disease).
• Weakness may arise rapidly to affect muscles of the trunk (cause respiratory failure), affect the arms and
neck muscles, face and cranial nerves. Autonomic dysfunction. Mild or no sensory signs
