23 MEDICATION TIPS YOU MAY KNOW

1. Don't put nifedipine tablets under your tongue, whenever your BP is very high. Visit the nearest health facility as soon as possible.

2. Never break, crush, or chew any capsule or tablet unless directed to by your healthcare provider or Pharmacist.

3. Do not give cafemol(Aspirin 81mg) to kids, you will increase their probability of having stomach ulcers(bleeding) or kidney failure. Only give when recommended by your Pediatrician.

4. Paracetamol will work faster on an empty stomach.

5. Eating oily food and taking malaria medication like Artemether/lumefantrine (e.g Coartem, Lonart etc) will make it work better.

6. Don’t take NSAIDs (e.g Brufen, indocid, Diclofenac) or Multivitamins on an empty stomach. They will irritate your stomach.

7. Dexamethasone and Prednisolone increases blood sugar and should not be taken by someone who is diabetic (when taken, the blood sugar should seriously be monitored). Talk to your healthcare provider about that.

8. Prednisolone interacts with birth control pills.

9. Don’t take take Dexamethasone for weight gain. Using it for such will only harm you. Only use it when prescribed. Dexamethasone works by reducing your immune system, it is to be used only when prescribed because the benefits outweighs the risks. Using it on your own is bad and very dangerous.

10. If you are taking Magnesium trisilicate (MMT, Polygel) and another drug, take the Polygel at least 3hrs before taking the drug or 2hrs after taking the drug.

11. Take tetracycline 2hrs before or 6hrs after taking an antacid.

12. Take tetracycline 2hrs before or after taking zinc containing products.

13. Tetracycline can HARM the FETUS. If you are pregnant or have plans of becoming pregnant while taking tetracycline, call your doctor immediately.

14. Taking Tetracycline with alcohol or within the period of alcohol intake is highly not advised.

15. If you have epilepsy don’t take Ciprofloxacin as it can precipitate seizure attack in people with epilepsy.

16. If you are severely depressed don’t take Ciprofloxacin.

17. Don’t take more than 2tablets of paracetamol once. It’s also important u know that the highest daily dose of paracetamol you can take is 3000mg/day and that’s 6tabs (i.e 500mg). Except u are being supervised by a healthcare provider, above that u’re doing damage to ur liver.

18. Don’t take Ciprofloxacin or flagyl for menstrual pain. Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic and not paracetamol.

19. Taking Diclofenac for ulcer pain is suicidal. Diclofenac is a painkiller yes, but it can cause ulcer so it’s wrong to take it for ulcer pain.

20. Don’t take two NSAIDs:
Don’t take Ibuprofen(Brufen) and Diclofenac. Don’t take indocid and Ibuprofen(Brufen) together. Doing that can damage your kidneys and cause ulcer.

21. Don’t take Dexamethasone together with Ibuprofen or Diclofenac. Doing this results in increased side effects. You do more harm to yourself.

22. It’s particularly wrong to use alcohol or soda to take your drugs.

23. The time in which u take your drugs is very important. It’s not just there. Some drugs have higher effects in the morning, others in the evening, if it’s prescribed for u to take it in the morning, do that.

Remember, ALL drugs are POTENTIAL poison when Abused or used wrongly. Always consult your Pharmacist.

140 LEARNERS TEST POSITIVE FOR COVID-19

About 140 learners from three secondary schools have tested positive for COVID-19, Minister of Health Sylvia Masebo has told Parliament.

In a ministerial statement yesterday, Ms Masebo said of the 137 pupils who contracted the novel virus, 64 are from Kapiri Mposhi Girls Technical Secondary School and 59 from Chisamba Boarding School in Central Province.

A similar cluster of COVID-19 cases involving 14 pupils was observed at Nchelenge Secondary School in Luapula Province between February 22 and 27, 2024.

Ms Masebo said 12 pupils at Kapiri Mposhi Girls Technical Secondary School and 22 learners at Chisamba Boarding School had previously been vaccinated against the virus.

She said two pupils from Kapiri Mposhi Girls School were initially admitted but have since been discharged.

“I want to assure you that currently all the learners are stable,” Ms Masebo said.
The minister also said in the same period, nine deaths, out of which six were COVID-19-related and three confirmed COVID-19 deaths, were highlighted.

“The deaths have been in Lusaka, Mansa, Chingola and Mbala. All these individuals were not vaccinated against COVID-19,” she said Ms Masebo said through the routine COVID-19 surveillance system, the country has seen a steady rise in the number of positive cases beginning the last week of December 2023.

She said there has been an increase in COVID-19 positivity in the initial weeks of this year, with a total number of suspected cases captured at 17,860, with 3,292 (18.4 percent) cases having been confirmed.

1. When you are instructed to take a medication three(3) times a day, it actually means you should take it every 8 hours.

Example: 06hrs, 14hrs and 22hr.

2. When it’s two(2) times a day, it means you’re to take it every 12 hours.

Example: 06hrs and 18hrs or 08hrs and 20hrs

3. When it’s four times a day, it means every 6 hours.

Examole: 06hrs, 12hours, 18hrs and 24hours.

4. When you are required to take it once daily, try to pick a particular time. You can choose either 08hrs or 19hrs, depending on your schedule.

This is usually done to ensure that the medication remains at a consistent level in the body and provides the desired therapeutic effect

It is important to follow the healthcare provider's instructions carefully and take the medication as directed, as taking the medication too frequently or not frequently enough could reduce its effectiveness or cause unwanted side effects. If there is any confusion or uncertainty about how to take the medication, it is important to ask the Pharmacist for clarification.

Don't hurry off without asking questions!

CAUSE AND SYMPTOMS OF URIC ACID
Health Talk
Uric acid is a waste product that’s created when your body breaks down chemicals called purines in food and drinks. Most uric acid dissolves in your blood, passes through your kidneys and leaves your body in your p*e (urine). Hyperuricemia happens if too much uric acid stays in your body.

Hyperuricemia causes uric acid to clump together in sharp crystals. These crystals can settle in your joints and cause gout, a painful form of arthritis. They can also build up in your kidneys and form kidney stones.

Hyperuricemia is very treatable. You might need to change some aspects of your daily routine (like tweaking your diet or drinking more water). A healthcare provider might prescribe you medicine to lower your uric acid levels or treat any symptoms you’re experiencing.

How does hyperuricemia affect my body?
You might not notice you have hyperuricemia, especially if your levels are only slightly elevated. But over time, the buildup of uric acid in your blood can lead to pain and ot

Symptoms and Causes
What are the symptoms of hyperuricemia?
Hyperuricemia itself doesn’t usually cause symptoms. Most people don’t know they have it until their uric acid levels are high enough to cause gout or kidney stones.

Intense pain.
Discoloration or redness.
Stiffness.
Swelling.
Tenderness, even to light touch (like your bedsheet covering it).
Warmth, or a feeling like the joint is “on fire.”
Symptoms of kidney stones include:

Pain in your lower back or side.
Nausea or vomiting caused by the pain.
Fever or chills.
Blood in your p*e.
Pain while you’re p*eing.
Being unable to p*e.
Feeling the need to p*e more often.
P*e that smells bad or looks cloudy.
What causes hyperuricemia?
Extra uric acid in your blood causes hyperuricemia

Most cough and cold medicines are not safe for those with High blood pressure. If you or your loved one is taking High blood pressure medication, always talk to the Pharmacist first before buying/taking any cough and Cold medicines.

Most Cough and Cold medicines frequently contain Decongestant. Decongestant make Blood Pressure WORSE in two ways;

For those with with uncontrolled high hypertension, taking anything that rises the blood pressure may increase their chances of having a stroke and other high blood pressure related complication.

Examples of Decongestant found in cough mixtures include; Phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine.
