Today I wish to talk about two important aspects of Health Services in Zambia; Universal Health Coverage and Digital Health Literacy.

What is Universal Health Coverage (UHC)?
UHC means that all individuals and communities receive the full spectrum of essential, quality health services without financial hardship.

What Is Digital Health Literacy?

It’s the ability of individuals and communities to:
1. Access digital health tools (e.g. mobile apps, telemedicine platforms)
2. Understand health information delivered digitally
3. Use technology to make informed health decisions

Why Digital Health Literacy Matters for UHC in Resource-Limited Areas

1. Empower Communities
- Equip people to self-manage chronic conditions using mobile health apps
- Improve maternal and child health through SMS-based reminders and education
- Reduce misinformation and promote preventive care

2. Bridge Access Gaps
- Enable remote consultations via telemedicine
- Support community health workers with digital job aids and decision-support tools
- Facilitate referrals and follow-ups through interoperable digital platforms

3. Strengthen Health Systems
- Improve data collection and reporting for better planning
- Enhance transparency and accountability in service delivery
- Support real-time monitoring of drug stocks and service availability

🌡️ Health Alert: Diarrhoea Cases Rising with Seasonal Heat—Report & Test Promptly!

As temperatures rise in Isoka, so does the risk of seasonal diarrhoea, often triggered by unsafe water, poor food hygiene, and increased bacterial growth in hot conditions. Diarrhoea is more than a nuisance—it can signal serious infections like cholera, typhoid, or other enteric pathogens.

🔬 Why Laboratory Testing Matters:
Every diarrhoea case is a diagnostic opportunity. Timely lab testing helps:
- Identify the exact cause (bacterial, viral, or parasitic)
- Prevent outbreaks through early detection
- Guide proper treatment and public health response

📢 Community Call to Action:
- Report all diarrhoea cases to your nearest health facility
- Ensure samples are collected and sent for lab testing
- Promote safe water, food hygiene, and handwashing
- Encourage early care-seeking, especially for children and elders

🧼 Prevention Starts at Home:
- Boil or treat drinking water
- Wash hands with soap before eating and after using the toilet
- Store food safely and avoid street food during peak heat

Let’s turn vigilance into protection. Your report could stop the next outbreak.

To strengthen the tiered laboratory systems of its member countries in a stepwise
fashion, WHO-AFRO has established a Stepwise Laboratory Improvement Process
Towards Accreditation (SLIPTA) initiative in accordance with its core functions of
setting norms and standards and building institution capacity. In partnership with
WHO-AFRO, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the
American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), and the Clinton Foundation
developed a task-based, hands-on training program to facilitate implementation
of this initiative.
So far in Zambia, 10 more Labs across 10 provinces have been added and enrolled in implementing this initiative. Among the labs, Isoka District Hospital Laboratory is also a beneficially.

AFLATOXIN⚠

A group of toxic and carcinogenic compounds produced by certain fungi, particularly Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. These fungi can contaminate various foods, especially:

1. Nuts (peanuts, almonds, walnuts)
2. Seeds (cottonseed, sunflower)
3. Grains (corn, rice, wheat)
4. Spices (chili peppers, black pepper)
5. Dried fruits (dates, figs)

Aflatoxins can cause:☣

1. Liver damage and cancer
2. Immune system suppression
3. Birth defects
4. Neurological problems
5. Respiratory issues

There are four main types of aflatoxins:🔴

1. Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) - most toxic and carcinogenic
2. Aflatoxin B2 (AFB2)
3. Aflatoxin G1 (AFG1)
4. Aflatoxin G2 (AFG2)

To minimize exposure to aflatoxins:🚨

1. Store food properly
2. Avoid moldy or spoiled food
3. Use proper drying and processing techniques
4. Monitor food for fungal growth
5. Implement regulatory limits for aflatoxins in food products

Remember, aflatoxins are a serious health concern, and prevention is key!
