HERBS VS HOSPITAL PRESCRIBED MEDICINE: SAFE ALTERNATIVE OR SILENT RISK?

We noticed a growing trend that sounds harmless at first:

“I’ve stopped my BP/Diabetes medication… I’m now using herbs.”

Now let’s be clear — herbal medicine is not useless. In fact, many modern medicines actually come from plants. So yes… herbs can work.

But here’s where the danger quietly creeps in

When It Comes to Chronic Illness Like:
●Hypertension (BP)

●Diabetes

●Asthma

●Epilepsy

●Heart Disease

These are long-term conditions that require:

●Consistent dosing

● Predictable effects

● Lifelong monitoring

You are not treating a headache… you are managing a condition that can silently damage

●Kidneys

● Brain

● Eyes

●Heart

HERBAL MEDICINE VS PRESCRIBED HOSPITAL CONVENTIONAL MEDICATION
(Especially in Long-Term Conditions like Hypertension & Diabetes)

1 ) EFFECTIVENESS (EFFICACY)

HERBAL MEDICINE:
May help in lowering blood pressure or blood sugar, but results are not consistent from person to person. One batch of herbs may be stronger or weaker than the next.

PRESCRIBED MEDICINE:
Clinically tested to lower BP or blood sugar to a specific target range. Doctors know what result to expect at a particular dose.

2) DOSING

HERBAL MEDICINE:
Often taken in estimates such as:
●“One cup”

●“Half a bottle”

●“Two leaves”

This makes it difficult to know:
●How much you are taking

●If it’s too little to work

●Or too much and dangerous

PRESCRIBED MEDICINE:
Exact dose is known:
●5mg

●500mg

●1 tablet twice daily

This helps maintain BP or sugar at a safe level over a long period.

3) SIDE EFFECTS

HERBAL MEDICINE:
Side effects are often not well documented. Some may affect the liver, kidneys or cause BP or sugar to drop too low without warning.

PRESCRIBED MEDICINE:
Side effects are known, studied and monitored. Your Pharmacist or Doctor knows what to look out for and how to adjust treatment if needed.

4) MIXING WITH OTHER MEDICATION

HERBAL MEDICINE:
Combining herbs with BP or diabetes medicine may:

●Drop BP too low

●Cause dizziness or fainting

●Lead to dangerously low blood sugar

PRESCRIBED MEDICINE:
Drug interactions are studied before approval and monitored during treatment.

5) CONVENIENCE (STORAGE & CARRYING)

HERBAL MEDICINE:
●Can be bulky

●May spoil

●Difficult to carry when travelling

●Sometimes seasonal or unavailable

PRESCRIBED MEDICINE:
●Easy to store

●Portable

●Stable for long-term use

●Readily available for lifelong treatment

6) MONITORING

HERBAL MEDICINE:
●Often used without checking BP or blood sugar regularly.

PRESCRIBED MEDICINE:
Treatment goes hand in hand with:
●BP monitoring

●Blood sugar monitoring

●Regular review by a healthcare professional

TAKE HOME
HERBS can work — but for chronic diseases like hypertension and diabetes, safety depends on:

●Proper dosing

●Known side effects

●Regular monitoring

●Approval from your Doctor or Pharmacist before combining with prescribed medicine

Herbs may support treatment…
But abandoning prescribed medicine without professional guidance can cost you your kidneys, eyesight or even your life.

Let’s combine tradition with science — safely.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO USE A PREGNANCY URINE TEST?

As a Pharmacist, one of the most common questions I get at the counter is:

👉 “Can I use this pregnancy test any time, or must it be early in the morning?”

Let’s clear the confusion — with facts, not myths.

HOW PREGNANCY URINE TESTS WORK

Most pregnancy urine testers sold in pharmacies detect human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) — a hormone produced only after a fertilised egg implants in the uterus.

If hCG is present in your urine at a detectable level, the test turns positive.

MORNING URINE VS ANY TIME OF THE DAY

EARLY MORNING URINE IS BEST — especially if testing early
First-morning urine is more concentrated, meaning it contains a higher level of hCG.

This increases accuracy if:
-You are testing very early (close to your missed period)

-You have irregular cycles

-You want to avoid a false negative

YES, you can test at any time of day — IF enough hCG is present
Once pregnancy has progressed a bit (usually 1–2 weeks after a missed period), hCG levels are high enough to be detected any time of the day.

⚠️ However, drinking lots of water before testing can dilute urine and reduce hCG concentration — leading to a false negative, especially early on.

ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES FOR DIFFERENT TIMES?

Most standard pharmacy pregnancy tests:

●Detect hCG at 20–25 mIU/mL

●Are designed for early morning use for best accuracy

●Can still work later in the day if hCG levels are high

Some early detection tests are more sensitive, but no urine test is 100% accurate if done too early.

❌ COMMON MISTAKES I SEE IN THE PHARMACY

🚫 Testing too early (before implantation)

🚫 Testing in the afternoon after heavy fluid intake

🚫 Assuming one negative test means “not pregnant”

🚫 Reading results outside the recommended time window

PROFESSIONAL ADVICE FROM A PHARMACIST

● If testing before or just after a missed period → Use early morning urine

● If testing weeks later → Any time is okay

● If negative but symptoms persist → Repeat after 5–7 days

● Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions

Yes, tuberculosis is curable!

Tuberculosis is treated with antibiotics. To be effective, these medications need to be taken daily for 4–6 months.

⚠️ It is dangerous to stop the medications early or without medical advice. It can lead to drug-resistant tuberculosis.
