It is with great sadness that we received the news of our brother Anthony's (RM 2020 intake) passing. Just days ago, we were searching for him, and now this sad development on his demise๐Ÿ˜”. Our hearts go out to the family, friends, and the LCNM Alumni society. May Anthony's soul rest in peace ๐Ÿ™.

ABSCESS
Description
โœ…This is a collection of pus in the dermis and subcutaneous fat layer of the skin. It occurs as a result of infection of the hair follicles commonly caused by Staphylococcus aureus.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
๐Ÿ’ฏThe skin surrounding the affected hair follicle becomes red, hot, swollen and tender to touch. In severe cases, there will be fever and involvement of the local lymph nodes

TREATMENT
1. Supportive
โ€ข Encourage patient to maintain good general hygiene
โ€ข Apply hot compression 3-4 times daily until abscess is ready for draining.

2. Pharmacological
โœ…Cloxacillin
โ€ข Adults; 250 - 500mg orally. 6 hourly for 5 days,
โ€ข Children; 125 - 250mg orally 6 hourly five days
OR
โœ…Erythromycin
โ€ข Adults: 250 - 500mg orally 6 hourly for 5 days,
โ€ข Children:125-250mg orally 6 hourly for 5 days

Surgery
โ€ข Incision and drainage
โ€ข In cases of multiple abscesses, non-response to antibiotic therapy or an abscess in a diabetic, refer to a specialist
