Can you make living out of cracking mungongo nuts 😅? We believe we can. In last month, 12 local women managed to process 500 kg of nuts into edible and cosmetic oils. Check our stories to see how it is done professionally 😉.

The cooperation of MOTO (Mosi-Oa-Tunya Organics) and Booma Woman Cooperative created the brand of MUKUNI'S WILD OILS. We produce various wild oils collected from the local dry forest and savanna.

We aim to give value to the local underutilized and neglected species. We believe that the added value will generate economic and social benefits which will lead to sustainable management and protection of the environment.

By purchasing our products, you will also support local woman and forest. Moreover forest oils are extremely healthy and organic alternative to commercial cooking oils and cosmetics.

Have you ever tried forest oils?

The processing method of forest oils is cold seed-oil pressing powered by solar technology. A modern seed-oil press was delivered from the Czech Republic from a small town Ceska Skalice where is located local company Farmet.

We are sustainable processing plant and we generate our own power using solar technology. We are able to store power as well and the processing plant can run up to 8 hours without direct sunlight and/or heat.

The technical part of the processing plant was designed by Steven Tembo from MOTO, a professional electrician. He is as well maintaining and servicing the technology.

We are able to process about 10kg of nuts (S. rautanenii) per hour and we produce about 2 to 3 liters of oil.

Let us know if you are interested in any details on the technology and/or visit our site:

Together with local woman we formed a Booma Woman Multipurpose Cooperative. Booma means nuts of Schinziophyton rautanenii in local Tokaleia language. The tree is called Mooma. Others maybe know the tree/nuts as Mungongo or in English as Manketti.

The cooperative was established by 12 woman who participate on collection of raw materials (NWFP - nuts, fruits, seeds) and processing them into wild oils. The cooperative also runs the business and sales. Local woman are able to earn income and part of the net profit is dedicated to sustainable management and protection of the environment, local biodiversity, and especially the forest and tree species.

We were supported by the Department of Cooperatives of Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises. We were trained in established and management of cooperatives. And even the Director of the department visited our site and encouraged us in our work.

We were so thrilled that we were supported with technology for pressing of wild/forest oils. And moreover we were encouraged to continue with hard work as we were visited by the Ministry of tourism from Zambia and Ministry of foreign affairs from the Czech Republic.

If you wish to visit our site as well, feel welcome to experience processing of oils and get to know the local culture, tradition, environment, and biodiversity.

How did we turned our business idea and dream into reality and started processing wild oils without funding. We kept trying sharing our idea and mostly we received positive feedback. Which encouraged us to apply for funding for establishment of a small seed-oil processing plant. We were supported by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Lusaka in cooperation with Destination Livingstone Initiative.

With the support we managed to establish a small processing plant for production of wild forest oils. The location of the processing plant does not have access to electricity and we depend on solar technology. A seed-oil press machine was imported from the Czech Republic and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs handed over the equipment during his visit.

The tradition of processing NWFP (non-wood forest products) are slowly but gradually disappearing. Loss of cultural skills leads also to loss of knowledge on the local environment, biodiversity and its management.

We hear that we need to take care of the environment for the future generations. But change of lifestyle and habits is not easy. What about that we change the products we use which will be to the environment and local communities as well.

Many NWFP have nutritious and healthy properties. For example oil from S. rautanenii (mungongo) has skin-healing and anti-aging properties (Vitamin E and Zinc), oil from Sclerocarya birrea (marula) is high in anti-oxidants, contains essential fatty and amino acids, etc. We found at least 12 local species which has proven healthy benefits and are suitable for processing into oils.

We believe that adding value to forest products will improve access to social and economic benefits which will lead to sustainable management and protection of the environment.

Local people, especially woman and youth often depend on collection of forest products to support the household nutrition as they do not have access to many economic opportunities. Moreover, divorced and widowed woman often merely depend on food they collect in the surrounding dry forest.

The tradition on processing of forest products have been transferred from generation to generation especially among woman. The traditional method of cracking mungongo nuts (S. rautanenii) is practiced at least since the Holocene era. The same method of big and small pounding stone was found in Botswana dated as old as 12 thousands years.

We are located in Mukuni village near the Victoria Falls and Livingstone in southern Zambia. The dominant of the landscape is sandy soils and the tree of Schinziophyton rautanenii (known in local language as mungongo/booma, in english as manketti).

There are two seasons when the landscape completely changes. During the dry season the trees loose leaves and their bold greyish look is nicely visible from a drone. During the rainy season, the trees and other surrounding plants inclusive of grass become green.

The place is rich in edible and healthy non-wood forest products (NWFP) inclusive of nuts, fruits, mushrooms, etc. Local people, especially woman and youth collect these forest products to support the household with nutrition. Wild animals also graze on these forest products especially elephants who often enter the area to feed on fruits of S. rautanenii (mungongo) and other species.

Our farm and processing plant is not a main tourist activity around but if you are interested in our story or would like to learn more on the wildlife and biodiversity, visit us at: https://maps.app.goo.gl/3hNRsy8B856ZZ2Lg9
