Tips for Growing / Expanding Your Poultry Business

Poultry farming is profitable alright, but a lot of people still fail and incur lots of losses in this business all the same. A lot of investors have blamed themselves for going into the business.

Every business has its ‘trade secrets’ and a lot of people fail in business because they do not know the trade secrets of their business. Poultry, just like any other business out there has its trade secrets which you have to know to increase your chances at success.
1. Start small.: Don’t start large scale poultry farming if you are inexperienced in the business. Don’t read about how people are making millions from poultry farming and then go ahead to invest your life savings into the business or go and obtain loans to start a business you are inexperienced at. For a business like poultry farming, you have to start small and then expand gradually as your business grows and demands for your products increase. You should also do a proper feasibility study before you go into the business. If there are too many competitors or if the supply for poultry products exceeds the demand in your area, then look for somewhere else to start your business or look for another business to start. There are several other lucrative businesses in the livestock farming industry that you can consider.

2. Consider Meat Packaging and Production-: A lot of people get their poultry products from grocery stores and supermarkets. Very few people still buy live animals because they feel it is less stressful when you buy already packaged meat which you can use to make your meal in few minutes. Therefore, you should really consider having your own meat production and packaging business to sell the products from your farm.

Once you have your poultry farm, starting a meat packaging company is fairly easy. Just create a space for butchering and cleaning the animals, hire butchers and buy equipment that would make the job mechanized and faster, some refrigerators and then approach food regulatory agencies in your area for a license and boom! You are ready to start packaging your own meat.

3. Have your own sales outlet-: Another way to expand your poultry business is to have your own sales outlet and not rely only on supplying to retailers. You don’t have to have too many sales outlets; you can start with just one. You can sell your own branded chickens and chicken parts and fresh eggs to consumers.

4. Offer Mobile Sales and Delivery Services-: Twenty-four hours in a day is just not enough for most of us because of the kind of busy lives we lead. Now, imagine having to cook, shop for groceries, tend to the kids and do all sort of other house chores and still maintain a 9-5 job. It’s really not easy for a lot of working parents and this is why mobile sales and delivery services always works. A lot of people see such services as a live saving one; a service that brings you necessities without dealing with stress and traffic. With a van or two, you are ready to start offering such services within your area and that is also an expansion of your income.

5. Have your own Hatchery-: Instead of purchasing day old chicks, it’s more cost effective to have your own hatchery for hatching new chicks. You would be able to reduce the costs of hatching and also increase output compared to outsourcing the service to other people.

Important tips on poultry feed preparation

When making home made feed rations, it is important to do experimental trials, by isolating a number of chickens, feeding them and observing their performance. If the feed rations are right, the broilers will grow fast and layer will increase egg production (at least 1 egg after every 27 hours).

Farmers should be very careful with the quality of feed ingredients or raw materials. Chickens are very sensitive to feeds that contain mycotoxins which are present in most of the raw materials. Never use rotten maize (maozo) to make chicken feed.

Buy quality fishmeal from reputable companies. If omena is used the farmers must be sure of its quality; most of the omena in the open-air markets may be contaminated.

It is very important to mix all the micronutrients (amino acids) first before mixing with the rest of the feed.

For mixing, farmers are advised to use a drum mixer (many jua kali artisans can make one). Never use a shovel to mix feed because the ingredients will be unevenly distributed.

Spoilt maize is the main source of animal feed in Kenya. Such feed is dangerous as it ends up in human food in eggs, meat and even milk from dairy cows and goats.

It is easier for small-scale farmers working in groups to buy some of the ingredients such as pre-mixes and amino acids after which they can share the product according to each one’s contribution.

What to go for when buying bull semen

The big question often asked by dairy farmers is that what is the role of bull semen in cattle improvement. Bull semen is the pathway to profitable dairy business, therefore, must be able to transfer the following traits to a dairy herd.

Longevity

This is the period your high-yielding cow stays on the farm producing. It is important for the financial performance of the herd.

High longevity means a low culling rate, high milk production and low vet costs. The higher the number of lactations per cow, the higher the life time milk production and the more profitable the cow is.

Health and fertility

Udder health is a major challenge affecting the dairy enterprise. It leads to huge losses arising from reduced production, high vet costs and is a major cause of high culling rates.

A dairy farmer must select his bull semen from a pool of bulls with proven transferability of protection against mastitis.

Often linked to this trait is fertility. Kenyan dairy cows have long calving intervals. Ideally, a cow should produce a calf once a year but the average calving interval is about 600 days.

The problem, more often, is the inability to conceive usually preceded by silent heat and sometimes accompanied by pregnancy loss or abortion.

These problems can be avoided by breeding for fertility. The power is in the genes hence a farmer must select bull semen that will impart this power to the daughters of his cows and heifers

Production

Overall milk production determines a herd’s income. If a farmer is breeding for profits, he must select from the leading cow families in terms of milk production and the willingness to produce.

The production must be in terms of volume of milk and milk components like protein and fats

Conformation

Bull semen will transfer features that contribute to stature of the future cow. The feet and legs must be “dairy” to carry the weight of the animal and aid in locomotion, especially grazing animals.

Conformation traits determine the longevity of the cow and how durable they are and avoid issues of lameness and retained placenta as well they are a factor of milk production.

The beauty of a cow is in the genes and if a farmer is breeding heifers for sale and for agricultural shows, select your bull semen from a pool of beautiful bulls to inherit good conformation.

Reliability

A farmer will select the right bull semen from a bull catalogue. The information contained in a catalogue must be derived from large number of tests done on the semen and proven to be repeatable over and over using a large population of animals.

Genome trials where gene mapping of useful traits is done on young bulls before they even reach semen production age (puberty) is also used to create bull catalogues.

Selected bull semen must have high reliability for a dairy farmer to trust and use.

If a dairy farmer has a cow whose production is low, the first bull semen selection criteria should be production trait.

Therefore, select semen from a bull with high production. If the same cow has problems with feet or hooves, the farmer should select to improve both production, feet and legs. It is important that the farmer uses semen from renowned suppliers.

The breeding objective of every farmer is to ensure the offspring is better than the mother.

Success in breeding is dependent upon other factors including feeding the cows well with a balanced diet that has energy, protein, vitamins, mineral salts like Maclik Super (for lactating cows), Maclik Plus for heifers and clean water.

Detection of heat and proper timing of insemination is key in ensuring conception occurs. The signs to look out for are bellowing, mounting, standing to be mounted, clear vulval discharge and vulval swelling.

Artificial insemination should be done when the cow is standing to be mounted usually 12 hours since the heat signs are first noticed.

Proper record-keeping is important to track the heat, pregnancy history and to trace the pedigree development for each cow family.

Taking care of cattle during rainy season

With coming of rains after a long drought and this means more feeds for dairy cattle. With good management your thin animals will gain good weight. This is important information for any livestock farmer.

Farmers must therefore be aware of the good and the bad to tap into the opportunity presented by the rains or mitigate against negative effects.

Harvest that water

It is a time to harvest water and store it for the dry spell. It is also a time to plant napier grass, sweet potatoes and other grasses. Thanks to the rains within a week, you will see green vegetation sprout from the once dry ground.

Yes, lush pastures are pleasing to the eye and animals will eat lots of them, but there is a catch.

The rains bring with them plenty pasture and it is a good time to consider pasture conservation.

Think about making silage now and hay latter because it will not be long before the grass mature and wither away with the next dry season.
....What to watch out for

Be warned that the green grass that sprouts forth immediately after the rains isn’t good for your animals.

This is because it is deficient in fibre but very rich in moisture content and can easily cause bloating which if not treated will result in death.
.....Green poison

Feeding your livestock purely on this young grass will cause diarrhoea which can further worsen the body condition. To avoid this, mix the green pasture with hay and gradually introduce the animal to green lush.

Sudden introduction of the animal to large quantities of lush pastures should be avoided at this initial stages.

Just as rains awaken long dried pastures so does it bring to life disease causing micro-organisms and vectors.

The moisture and warmth that comes with rainfall offers the much needed conditions form their multiplication.
....How to prevent diseases

Disease vectors like tsetse flies, mosquitoes and ticks will increase in population and this subsequently increases the risk of infection.

To reduce disease incidences increase spraying intervals and feed your animals well to further improve their immunity.
....Strategic deworming

This is a time for infestation with external and internal worms.

Consider carrying out strategic deworming using a broad spectrum dewormer.
....How well is the drainage on your farm?

This is a fundamental question with the advent of the rains. Poor drainage can result in contamination or silting of boreholes and at the same time stagnant waters aren’t good as they provide breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

When animals stand in waters for long, they develop foot infections which have a negative effect on their productivity.

Ensure that your animals aren’t in wet environments and disinfect their feet using footbaths to kill any bacteria.
...Make use of footbaths

Wet and muddy cow shades also predispose lactating animals to mastitis.

The cold conditions also predispose animals to pneumonia.

To prevent this, provide your animals with good shelter and don’t leave them exposed to rain storm. Calves are especially prone to pneumonia during this time.

Poor drainage can also lead to dampening of feeds stored on the farm.

Moulding of hay is common with the wet conditions and it reduces the nutritive value of feeds and makes them less palatable. Never feed your animals on rotting or mouldy feeds as they can cause fatal poisoning.
