Public Health Alert: Meningitis Outbreak in Mwense

The Ministry of Health has confirmed a Pneumococcal Meningitis outbreak at Mwense Secondary School in Luapula Province.

Situation Update:

83 suspected cases

5 confirmed

2 deaths

17 still admitted

16 discharged

Laboratory findings confirm Streptococcus pneumoniae as the primary cause, with Influenza A/B and Klebsiella pneumoniae also detected.

Response Measures:

Isolation centres established in Mwense and Mansa

Mass screening and strengthened infection prevention and control.

Training of health workers.

Community engagement and sensitisation.

Preventive antibiotic treatment (no mass vaccination planned).

Be Alert for Symptoms:
Common symptoms include fever, stiff neck, confusion, and headache. Early health-seeking behaviour is critical.

Prevention Tips:

Wash hands regularly

Wear a mask in crowded spaces.

Avoid overcrowded areas.

The Zambia Medical Association urges the public and all health professionals to remain vigilant. Early detection, prevention, and community awareness are key to containing the outbreak and protecting public health.
