MENINGITIS
What is Meningitis?🤔
Meningitis is the inflammation of the structures that surrounds the brain and the spinal cord. These structures are called meninges, hence the name meningitis.
The brain is a highly delicate organ hence being protected by so many structures, beginning from the scalp upto to the various layers of meninges covering it. Anything affecting these meninges will lead to a reaction that will end up causing irritations to these structures.
Meningitis is deadly but highly preventable and treatable.
TYPES OF MENINGITIS.
they're various forms of meningitis, most of these depend on the cause. So you have infectious and non infectious types.
The infectious ones are the commonest. Among them bacterial meningitis is the most common.
The bacteria that causes respiratory or chest infections can also cause meningitis, bacterium like Pneumococcal pneumonia, TB, Neisseria meningitidis and many others.
RISK FACTORS
1.Extremes of age, children and the elderly are particularly at a higher risk than others.
2. People with low immunity, such as people with HIV/AIDS, (especially those not on medication or with poor compliance) people with malnutrition, people on long-term steroids, people being treated for cancers, people who underwent organ transplantation.
3. Sharing of utensils
4. Through being near someone coughing
5. Poor hygiene or poor food handling techniques
6. Etc
HOW WILL A PERSON PRESENT?
A person can have;
1. Fever
2. Neck stiffness
3. Light sensitivity( photophobia)
4. Nausea and Vomiting
5. Malaise ( that feeling of being sick)
6. Headache
7. If the inflammation has progressed to affect the brain itself the person can show signs of confusion too.
HOW DO YOU DIAGNOSE?
Through history and physical examination, other laboratory investigations.
A Lumber puncture can be done to confirm the cause ( yes that same lumber puncture that women undergoing a cesarian section do).
Imaging can also be done.
TREATMENT
Meningitis is highly preventable and treatable.
Treatment is usually tailored towards the cause.
