Fales Mwamba: Shaping Zambia's Health Outcomes.

Her career is a testament to resilience, innovation and service. For over 30 years, she has stood behind the microscope ensuring the unseen world of pathogens and
diagnostics translates into better health outcomes for the people of Zambia.

Her story is one of curiosity turned into lifelong service, of a woman who chose a path less travelled and through dedication and vision helped build the foundations of modern laboratory science in her country. In her own words, she has no regrets. And for Zambia, her choice has made all the difference.

Give to Gain: International Women’s Day

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the power of giving in science. In biomedical sciences, every time a woman shares knowledge, mentors a student, collaborates across disciplines, or opens doors for another woman in the lab, we all gain.

When we give our time to mentor young scientists, we gain stronger future leaders. When we give our voices to advocate for equity in research, we gain a more inclusive scientific community. When we give our ideas through collaboration, we gain discoveries that improve health and save lives.

Women in biomedical science are not only advancing research, they are building networks of support, knowledge, and opportunity.

Today, let’s commit to giving forward: mentoring, collaborating, and uplifting one another. Because when women in science give, the entire world gains.

Tag a woman who has given you a lift and tell us what you’re gaining by giving this year. Happy International Women’s Day.

Biomedical Expertise Recognised at the Highest Level of Research Governance

Congratulations to Dr Freeman Wagad Chabala on his appointment as a Member of the National Health Research Ethics Board (NHREB) under the National Health Research Authority.

As the Vice President of the Biomedical Society of Zambia, this appointment is not only a personal honour, but also a strong signal of the growing recognition of biomedical and laboratory professionals in shaping national systems at the highest level.

Research ethics, policy, and regulation are central to a safe, credible, and forward-looking health sector. To see one of our own entrusted with this responsibility speaks to the value of our profession, the strength of our expertise, and the important place biomedical scientists hold in national decision-making.

We are encouraged that biomedical professionals are continuing to take up leadership roles that influence the direction of health research and protect the public interest in Zambia.

Please join us in congratulating Dr Chabala on this well-deserved appointment. We wish him wisdom and grace as he serves the nation in this important role.
