Why is it not advisable to put nifedipine under the tongue?
Nifedipine is a medication used to treat high blood pressure and certain heart conditions. It belongs to a class of drugs known as calcium channel blockers.
Nifedipine tablets are designed to be swallowed whole and should not be crushed or chewed. It is not advisable to put nifedipine under the tongue because it can cause a rapid and significant drop in blood pressure, leading to dizziness, lightheadedness, and even fainting.
When nifedipine is swallowed, it is slowly absorbed into the bloodstream, allowing the body to adjust to the medication's effects. However, if nifedipine is placed under the tongue, it is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, which can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure.
Dear patients, follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider or the medication label when taking nifedipine or any medication. If you have any questions or concerns about how to take your medication, you should speak with your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
