On behalf of the Zambia Association of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians (ZAGO), we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Mufulira District for hosting this year’s World Contraception and International Safe Abortion Day commemorations respectively. Their preparations were unmatched, dedication amazing, focus to raising awareness about the importance of access to modern contraceptives and safe abortion services respectively – made significant impact to the SRH movement. Many thanks to the guest of honour, District Commissioner, Mr Evaristo Chilumba, and keynote speakers, Town Clerk Mrs Kasonde Chisanga Musongole, District Health Director Dr Able Hamoonga, and Dr Chazya Sikambale for continued support towards achieving a healthier Zambia. To everyone at the centre of organising the event, thank you for your support and commitment to promoting reproductive health.
This year’s International Safe Abortion Day carried the theme “Safe Abortion is Life-saving Healthcare”, while World Contraception Day was commemorated under the theme “A choice for all – agency, intention, access.”

As we join the globe in commemorating International Safe Abortion Day, we are cognisant of the huge burden unsafe abortion poses not only to individual women and girls, but also to the healthcare system. We therefore join hands with all stakeholders to prevent unsafe abortion countrywide.

Yesterday, we held a media conference ahead of today's World Contraception Day. The event brought together media practitioners, healthcare providers, Civil Society Organisations, parents and young people to raise awareness about the critical role of contraception in reducing maternal and infant mortality, preventing unintended pregnancies, and promoting gender equality.
As Zambia joins the rest of the world in commemorating this important day, ZAGO emphasise the call to highlight the importance of contraception and family planning to curbing unintended pregnancies, teenage pregnancies, and enhancing gender equality.

The ZAGO team recently successfully undertook onsite visits across all project sites on the Copperbelt to assess the implementation of the SRH (Sexual and Reproductive Health) project. The visits provided valuable insights, strengthened our resolve and collaboration with healthcare facilities, healthcare workers, community members, and adolescents and young people – and ensured all awareness activities are reaching the communities effectively.
A huge thanks to everyone involved – your dedication and hard work are making a real difference on the ground! Together, we're advancing awareness, and access to SRH services for adolescents and young people. We are gradually eliminating many challenges and barriers facing adolescents and young people to access SRH services.
Together, we stand strong!

SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF BASELINE DATA ANALYSIS
Baseline Survey Data analysis phase for the "Improving Access to and Use of SRH Services by Adolescents and Young" project has successfully been completed.
This pivotal step was aimed at reviewing and analyse the data collected on the existence and functionality of youth friendly health spaces and services in the ten districts in which the project is being implemented.
The comprehensive data analysis has preliminarily provided crucial insights into existence and functionality of youth friendly health spaces and services, accessibility, awareness, and utilization of SRH services. With this information, we should be able to now better appreciate the barriers faced by young people and identify effective strategies to address these challenges.

Armed with these insights, ZAGO is committed to working closely with all stakeholders and communities to implement evidence-based interventions. Our goal is to create a supportive environment where young people feel empowered to seek and receive the health care they deserve.

We would like to extend our gratitude to everyone who contributed to this process, and especially the young people who were at the centre of collecting this data, and who shared their experiences and voices.
Together, we are paving the way for a healthier future.

DATA COLLECTION SURVEY: “IMPROVING ACCESS TO AND USE OF SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH (SRH) SERVICES AMONG ADOLESCENTS AND YOUNG PEOPLE” PROJECT
________________________________________
We are pleased to share with you about the successful data collection survey exercise for the project titled “Improving Access to and Use of Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) Services among Adolescents and Young People.” This is aimed at understanding and enhancing the accessibility, quality, and utilization of SRH services for adolescents and young individuals within our target communities.
The data collection phase, which commenced on 3rd to 14th March, 2025, concluded on great note, marking a significant milestone in our ongoing effort to address and improve sexual and reproductive health outcomes for young people. Over the course of this survey, we engaged with diverse groups across the three provinces: Eastern, Lusaka, and Copperbelt, reaching out to healthcare providers, parents, and young people. The participation was overwhelming. Our data collectors most of whom were young people have been instrumental in gathering comprehensive insights into the challenges and barriers faced in accessing these vital services.
Through a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, the survey investigated key areas, including:
 Availability and accessibility of youth-friendly spaces
 Awareness of available SRH services among adolescents and young people.
 Barriers to accessing these services, including social stigma, lack of information, and availability.
 Utilization patterns, including the frequency and type of services accessed.
 Perceptions of service quality and relevance to the needs of young people.
The data collected will serve as a foundational element for developing strategies that aim to improve the availability, accessibility, quality, and acceptance of SRH services tailored specifically for adolescents and young people. We believe that the findings will not only inform policy and health providers but also empower the youth by amplifying their voices in discussions related to their health and rights.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all everyone who participated in this momentous undertaking, partners, organizations, and volunteers who played a crucial role in facilitating survey. Your efforts have been invaluable in ensuring a wide reach and accurate data collection. We would also like to thank the participants for their courage and openness in sharing their experiences and insights, which will contribute significantly to the efficacy of future SRH programs.
As we move forward, the data from this survey is now undergoing analysis, and results expected to be shared with stakeholders in due course. We are committed to ensuring that the findings lead to actionable recommendations that will enhance SRH services for adolescents and young people.
Thank you once again for your support and commitment to promoting the health and well-being of the young people. We look forward to continued collaboration as we work towards a future where every young person can access the SRH services they need and deserve.
