A stroke is a medical condition that occurs when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted or reduced, either due to a blockage (ischemic stroke) or a rupture (hemorrhagic stroke) of the blood vessels in the brain.
There are three main types of stroke:
1. *Ischemic stroke*: Caused by a blockage in a blood vessel, reducing blood flow to the brain.
2. *Hemorrhagic stroke*: Caused by a rupture in a blood vessel, leading to bleeding in the brain.
3. *Transient ischemic attack (TIA)*: A temporary blockage, often called a "mini-stroke," which resolves on its own.
Common symptoms of stroke include:
- Sudden weakness or numbness in the face, arm, or leg
- Sudden confusion or trouble speaking
- Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
- Sudden severe headache
- Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, or loss of balance
If you suspect someone is having a stroke, act F.A.S.T.:
- F - Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side droop?
- A - Arm: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
- S - Speech: Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. Is their speech slurred or difficult to understand?
- T - Time: Time is of the essence. Call for emergency medical services immediately if you observe any of these symptoms.
