Today, ZAFOD took part in the commemoration of Parliament Day, held under the theme “Strengthening Parliamentary Democracy through Inclusivity and Participation.”

As part of the event, ZAFOD hosted an interactive exhibition where we showcased our work, shared our key thematic areas, and engaged stakeholders on the importance of promoting the inclusion of persons with disabilities in governance and decision-making processes.

We were honored to be visited by the Speaker of the National Assembly, who engaged with our team and emphasized the importance of making Parliament more accessible and inclusive. In her remarks, she highlighted the commitment to ensuring representation of persons with disabilities, especially in light of the upcoming 2026 general elections and the available nominated positions.

The Speaker also expressed willingness for Parliament to collaborate with ZAFOD in addressing existing gaps in accessibility and inclusion, reaffirming the shared goal of building a Parliament that represents all citizens.

ZAFOD remains committed to advocating for inclusive governance and ensuring that persons with disabilities are not left behind.

ZAFOD 𝐂𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐜 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 recently featured on LIVE RADIO to discuss “𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐂𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐕𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬.”

𝐂𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐜 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 underscored that inclusive participation is fundamental to a strong and representative democracy, emphasizing the vital role young persons with disabilities play in shaping decisions that directly impact their lives. They highlighted key barriers to participation, including inaccessibility, limited access to information, stigma, and insufficient support, and called for coordinated efforts to create a more inclusive and enabling environment.

They emphasized that decision-making processes must be inclusive, ensuring that no one is left out. Since policies impact everyone, every individual has the right to be heard, to participate, and to vote. The champions also called for stronger support for accessible voting, highlighting that inclusion is key to strengthening democracy.

At the core of the discussion was a powerful message: every voice matters, and every vote counts. Young persons with disabilities were encouraged to take an active role in civic processes and help shape a more inclusive and equitable Zambia.

Building on the momentum from the Levy Junction Mall Civic Hub, yesterday the 𝐙𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐚 𝐅𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 (𝐙𝐀𝐅𝐎𝐃) Civic Champions, together with the Center for Young Leaders in Africa-Zambia (CYLA) Ambassadors, successfully facilitated the second Civic Hub at Asado Shopping Complex, strategically located across the University of Lusaka – Silverest Campus.

The Civic Hub created an inclusive and interactive space that brought together UNILUS students, young persons with disabilities, youths, and members of the general public to engage in meaningful conversations on the importance of inclusive participation. The discussions emphasized the need to ensure that persons with disabilities are not only included but actively involved in civic and electoral processes.

Through dialogue, awareness sharing, and peer engagement, participants were encouraged to recognize their role in shaping an inclusive democracy, one where every voice is valued, and every vote counts. The Civic Hub also provided accessible information on Civic rights and voter education, reinforcing the message that participation is both a right and a responsibility for all.

As the Why My Voice Matters Campaign continues to expand its reach, these engagements remain critical in breaking down barriers, building confidence, and inspiring collective action toward a more inclusive and representative society.

On the 25th March 2026, the 𝐙𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐚 𝐅𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 (𝐙𝐀𝐅𝐎𝐃) in collaboration with the Center for Young Leaders in Africa-Zambia, hosted a civic information hub at Levy Shopping Mall.

Young persons with disabilities, youths, and students from Evelyn Hone College, Zambia Centre for Accountancy Studies, and the National Institute of Public Administration visited the hub to share Why Their Voice Matters in elections.

Our Civic Champions led meaningful conversations with their peers and members of the public who stopped by, sharing diverse perspectives on the importance of civic participation and voting. The conversations highlighted the need for inclusion, representation, and active citizenship because every voice matters in shaping a responsive and equitable society, especially the voices of young people with disabilities.

Inclusive voting strengthens democracy by ensuring that every voice is heard and represented. Your vote matters, because a truly strong democracy is one where no one is left behind.

Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

The Zambia Federation of Disability Organisations (ZAFOD) is the national civil society umbrella body of and for organisations of persons with disabilities in Zambia. Formed in 1981, ZAFOD has been advocating for the promotion and protection of disability rights and the inherent dignity of persons with disabilities for nearly forty years and has in the last ten years progressively increased its advocacy for the observance of political rights of persons with disabilities as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). In recent months, the Federation kicked off an advocacy campaign which aims at engaging with political party officials, election stakeholders and the broader public in an effort to dispel the negative attitudes that these groups have towards persons with disabilities. The campaign aims to significantly shift attitudes of the general population as well as political party officials on the abilities of persons with disabilities, their right to vote, and to be voted into office. ZAFOD’s ultimate goal is to see an increase in the number of persons with disabilities participating in the House of Parliament, in public positions of decision making, and in electoral processes including voter education and election monitoring.
