SUCCESSFUL COUNTRY EXCHANGE & LEARNING MEETING
The Zambia Association of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians [ZAGO] and JHPIEGO, as consortium successfully hosted Country Exchange and Learning Meeting for the Accelerating Measurable Progress and Leveraging Investment for Postpartum Haemorrhage Impact (AMPLI-PPHI) Project.

The project aimed at reducing maternal deaths due to PPH by promoting and scaling up the use of lesser used medicines such as Tranexamic Acid (TXA) and Heat Stable Carbetocin (HSC) and Calibrated Drapes for the treatment and prevention of PPH, a leading cause of maternal mortality in Zambia.

This impactful event brought together five partner countries: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria, and the host, Zambia – to share insights, strategies, and best practices in addressing PPH, a leading cause of maternal mortality.

Through dynamic discussions and collaborative learning, we are stronger and more committed than ever to saving lives and improving maternal health. Together, we're leveraging our collective approaches and strength to reduce, and end PPH in our respective countries.

Huge thanks to , , , , our partner countries, and everyone who participated and contributed to the success of this important meeting.

INTERNATIONAL SAFE ABORTION DAY
On this International Safe Abortion Day, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that safe, legal, and accessible abortion services are a fundamental human right. This day serves as an urgent reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by millions of individuals in accessing safe reproductive health services, including abortion care.
As we commemorate this day today, ZAGO reflects on the significant strides made toward reproductive health rights over recent years, but also acknowledges the persistent barriers that continue to hinder progress. Unsafe abortion remains one of the leading causes of maternal mortality and morbidity in the country.
Commemorating under the theme, , ZAGO calls for decriminalisation and removal of systemic barriers that restrict access to safe abortion.
We are cognisant of the importance of education on reproductive health, rights. Therefore, comprehensive s*x education plays a crucial role in empowering individuals with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their bodies and reproductive health. It is essential that more healthcare providers are trained to offer safe abortion services. This includes not only clinical training but also education on destigmatizing abortion care to ensure that healthcare providers offer compassionate and non-judgmental services.
As advocates for reproductive health rights, we call for togetherness: we must work in solidarity with organizations, activists, and communities countrywide. The struggle for safe abortion access transcends operational boundaries and demands a unified response to fight stigma and discrimination and promote reproductive justice.
Furthermore, addressing the disparities faced by marginalized communities is essential for true reproductive health justice. As a people, we must be particularly responsive to the needs of the marginalised and low-income individuals, rural populations, and those facing systemic discrimination.
Call to Action:
On this day of commemoration, we call upon everyone to recognize and act on the following:
1. Protect the right to safe and legal abortion without unnecessary barriers.
2. Invest in healthcare systems to provide comprehensive reproductive health services, including safe abortion care.
3. Foster an environment that promotes understanding, acceptance, and respect for reproductive rights as fundamental to gender equality, health, and dignity.
Together, we can create a Zambia where everyone has access to the care they need, without stigma, discrimination, fear, or violence. Let us renew our commitment to advocating for reproductive rights and ensuring that safe abortion services are available to all who need them.

Unsafe abortion can be fatal due to complications such as haemorrhage, infection, or blood loss. The costs of treating such complications are significant, placing a financial burden on individuals, families and the country health system. It is essential therefore to emphasize the importance of ensuring access to safe and legal abortion services to prevent these dangers and promote women's reproductive health and well-being. Let us all join hands in preventing unsafe abortion. No life should be lost due to unsafe abortion.

CHVs WORK POSITIVELY IMPACTING LIVES ACROSS COMMUNITIES

ZAGO recognizes Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) as key partners in promoting and improving the health and wellbeing of people across communities. This cadre of healthcare workers often work in remote or underserved areas where access to healthcare services may be limited. They bridge the gap between communities and healthcare facilities by providing essential healthcare services, information, and education to local residents. They promote public health, improve healthcare outcomes, and empower communities to take control of their own health. Their dedication, compassion, and tireless efforts make a considerable impact on the wellbeing of individuals and communities across the country.

Over the years, ZAGO has provided training to CHVs aimed at enhancing their capacity to provide quality services in many areas including s*xual reproductive health and rights (SRHR).
Of particular importance has been their role in advocating for safe abortion and reproductive health in their communities. We have noted how CHVs are helping dispel myths and misinformation surrounding abortion by providing accurate information about the procedure, its safety, and legality. They have also been providing emotional support and counselling to women considering abortion, as well as to those who have undergone the procedure; help individuals make informed decisions based on their personal circumstances.
We have also noted how CHVs are linking women to safe abortion services and providers, ensuring that they have access to quality care in a timely manner; help women navigate the healthcare system and remove barriers to accessing service.
ZAGO is aware that although stigma surrounding abortion, including (self-managed) – is slowly reducing in communities, more work is still needed. This is why ZAGO has been working hand in hand with CHVs to challenge stigma and discrimination surrounding abortion in communities by promoting a more supportive and compassionate environment for women and girls seeking care.
Awareness has continued to be raised about the importance of decriminalizing abortion, as well as the need for comprehensive s*xual and reproductive health education.
The work done by CHVs is highly commendable and is contributing to the reduction of maternal morbidity and mortality countrywide.
ZAGO will continue to capacity built and work with these very important stakeholders in our society through trainings, evidence-based information sharing as has been the case time and again. We continue to address disparities by reaching out to millions of people to ensure that all individuals have equal opportunities to lead a healthy life and receive the healthcare services they need.
