Today we are going to look at the effects of low brooding temperatures on broilers.
• Chilling: Normal body chick temperature ranges from 39.5ºC to 41ºC. If
the temperature falls way below this, the chicks are likely to die. Low
brooding temperatures may result in high first week mortality.
• Smothering/suffocation: When chicks are chilled (feeling Cold), They begin
to huddle (crowding) in a bid to keep warm. Unfortunately, some of them
will be suffocated as a result of crowding thereby leading to mortality.
• Reduced intake: When its too cold, chicks will spend time trying to keep
warm as opposed to eating. This will inevitably lead to poor first week
weights, lack of uniformity and increased number of starve outs (small
chicks which die between 3-5days and shown not to have eaten any food
but are not infected)
• Winter is here, ensure your chicks are warm enough. For maximum per-
formance, your chicks need to be in a thermo-neutral zone: A zone where
they feel neither hot nor cold.

• Pre- heating 2days before chick placement.
• Pre-heating should be done before litter placement to achieve minimum
floor and litter temperatures of 28°C and 30ºC respectively.
• Ensure that you have adequate litter of about 5cm - 7cm depth.
• Consider creating a false ceiling to keep heat in the brooding space
• Brooding temperatures of about 35°C maybe ideal depending on the RH.
• Once you place chicks, look at their behaviour to determine if chicks are
comfortable or not.
• If you are using a Mbaula as a source of heat, never forget that it does not
last the whole day/the whole night.
• In as much chicks require warm environments; they also need ventilation.
Don’t sacrifice Ventilation for temperature. Both are vital!

Chick behaviour speaks volumes! Here’s how to tell if your brooding conditions are right:
✅ Correct Temperature – Chicks are evenly spread, calm, and active.
🌡️ Too Hot – Chicks crowd away from the heat source, panting and spreading wings.
🥶 Too Cold – Chicks huddle tightly under the heat source, piling on top of each other.
💨 Drafty Conditions – Chicks gather in one direction, avoiding direct sunlight, cold air, or wind.
