ONCE IN WHILE HAVE A MEDICATION THERAPY REVIEW WITH YOUR PHARMACIST.
Musonda : Good morning Pharmacist, I am here to get these medications.π
Enalapril , Diclofenac and Frusemide. π
: Are you the one taking all these medications? π¦
Musonda : Yes Pharmacist. What's wrong? π
: These medications can cause what we call a "TRIPLE WHAMMY EFFECT".
Let me Explain π
π Concurrent use of an or (such as Enalapril & Losartan), a (such as Frusemide or hydrochlothiazide ), plus an (Ibuprofen, Diclofenac, Aspirin) together increases the RISK of having !
One study showed that when these medicines are prescribed together the patientβs risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) is increased by 31%.
And elderly people over the age of 65 and more are likely to develop kidney disease because as people age, so do their kidneys.
So taking such combination PLUS your AGE will increase your risk of developing impaired Renal function.
Other Risks of TRIPLE WHAMMY EFFECT induced Acute Kidney Injury include;
π Volume depletion( e.g. due to vomiting, diarrhoea, sepsis or low fluid intake).
π Older age(above 65 years)
π Diabetes
π Heart failure
π Liver disease.
Others studies have also shown that taking NSAIDs together with with diuretcs also reduces their Hypertension lowering power πͺ.
Musonda: What can I do to?
Avoid taking NSAIDs(Brufen, Diclofenac, naproxen, indomethacin etc) at all times and if recommended by your Doctor kidney function assessment should be done regularly.
I will write a note to your Doctor to review the prescription

: Always take your PRESCRIPTIONS to the PHARMACY for them to be examined (vetted), So as to avoid drug induced Organ damage, negative drug interactions & adverse drug reactions.
And always try & cooperate with Us (the Pharmacists) whenever we spot any medication error. Doctors aren't prefect, they do make errors at times, so it's left for the Pharmacist to spot those errors & make the appropriate corrections.
Your Caring Pharmacist.
