Physiotherapists donโt get enough credit for the work that they do, and today, I hope we receive all the flowers we deserve.
Itโs World Physiotherapy Day, a day to remind you that recovery is often incomplete without a Physiotherapist on your care team.
Every time someone regains their independence, takes a step they thought was lost, or moves without pain again, more often than not, a physiotherapist was involved. If not, well, thatโs a loss you donโt want to experience.
And should you, or anyone you know, have had to just manage health with all its restrictions without our guidance, youโll understand why we say: we have our work cut out for us too.
Hereโs what we do:
1. Help people walk again after surgeries, strokes, and accidents.
2. Reduce pain without drugs through movement, exercise, and therapy.
3. Restore strength, flexibility, and balance.
4. Speed up recovery and prevent long-term complications.
5. Design safe exercises for chronic conditions like arthritis and diabetes.
6. Help athletes recover and return stronger.
7. Improve breathing and lung function for patients with respiratory problems.
8. Support children with developmental delays to reach milestones.
9. Guide the elderly to move safely and prevent dangerous falls.
10. Teach posture and ergonomics to prevent workplace injuries.
11. Rehabilitate patients after joint replacements like hip and knee surgeries.
12. Help manage neurological conditions such as stroke, Parkinsonโs, and spinal cord injuries.
13. Restore hand function after fractures, burns, or nerve injuries.
14. Work in intensive care to keep muscles and lungs healthy.
15. Empower people to live independently and improve their quality of life.
When a 2 year old child whose dominant hand function was almost lost after a hot water accident began using her hands to play and actually be a child again, my heart was joyful.
When the patient in the orthopedic ward could finally walk straight again after a few sessions of physiotherapy, she cried and almost made us cry too.
When the patient who survived stroke regained over 90% of his pre-injury functions, his wife came with a convoy to say thank you.
These are the moments that remind us that we are more than just therapists. We are enablers of independence, champions of movement, and advocates of improved quality of life.
So, when it comes to function, freedom, and living fully, weโre here. Being a Physiotherapist is a full time job and I hope we can get enough credit for that.
Here's to every Physiotherapist:
Happy World Physiotherapy Day! ๐ฅ
