Yawn and Learn: A Fascinating Science Behind Yawning

Did you know that yawning is far more than just a sign of boredom?

BRAIN COOLING 🧠

The brain gets heated up quite a number of times due to multiple reasons like high temperatures, stress, migraines and anxiety. These factors increase body's internal core temperature. The yawning mechanism acts like a temporary cooling system for the brain. Just like a car or phone battery gets heated up once in a while, it's functional capacity either reduces or stops altogether to prevent worse outcomes like bursting due to continuously increased temperature. Just like that mechanism, so it is with our brains when they become heated up. When our brains become too overheated constantly, accidents can happen in the brain leading to hemorrhage or bleeding of small blood vessels, therefore leading to stroke.

One of the constantly worrying factors is the increased stress levels we encounter, luckily for us something as simple as a yawn slows down the process of our brains 'exploding' due to excessive intolerable heat and brain exhaustion.

So if you're stressed, and yawn, remember to find time to take a break, relax your mind through naps, sleep or other relaxing activities. You need it for proper functioning, so treat it right!

There is a lot of stigma, discrimination and preconceived ideas surrounding hepatitis which seems to increase the disease burden by creating many barriers to diagnosis and preventing people from getting tested.

Meet Arafat Bwambale from Uganda, a public health officer and medical clinical officer who shares his story about the harmful misconceptions about viral hepatitis.

"I was motivated to join the fight against viral hepatitis through a horrifying personal experience. When I was a newly-qualified medical clinical officer my uncle was diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)- liver cancer - caused by Hepatitis B.

While he was in hospital, a rumor started in the family that my uncle's wife had poisoned and bewitched him. As a result of this rumor, my uncle's wife was prevented from visiting him in the hospital. Sadly, he died two days later. The family also prevented her from attending my uncle's funeral and then demolished his house because they claimed that she had caused his death.

All of this happened despite me and my colleagues at the hospital telling the family that my uncle had died from liver cancer as a result of hepatitis B. I am certain that more families are going through the same thing, so I decided to spend my last atom of energy informing, educating and communicating about viral hepatitis to help tackle this lack of knowledge."

Happy World Hepatitis Day!

There is a lot of global stigma and discrimination that seems to culminate around person's living with blood-borne viruses like Hepatitis B or C and HIV both in the social and clinical setting.

These may include preconceptions that a person found with either of the blood-borne viruses may be sexually promiscuous. Such preconceptions are often fueled by lack of understanding and knowledge of transmission routes in Hepatitis. As a result of this, an irrational fear of being contagious and delaying to go to seek care sets in.

Stigma and discrimination like this leads to delay in healthcare and an increase in the disease rates. This makes it difficult for the disease to be controlled.

Hepatitis is a global health problem that usually comes with little or no symptoms. It is an inflammation of the liver and it cause severe liver disease and cancer.

Hepatitis can easily be prevented. Find out more about the disease by following the links below:
