BEYOND THE BREAKING POINT
In my today's reading of the book “Six More Chances: Success in the Midst of Failure,” by Dr. S. K. Pipim he recounts the parable of an old donkey that fell into a farmer’s abandoned well. For hours, the donkey cried piteously from its hopeless position, looking upward for a savior. After a while, the farmer heard the animal’s desperate cries. He sympathized with the donkey. But when he carefully assessed the situation, he felt that the stuck animal was quite old and the well needed to be covered up anyway; so it just wasn’t worth the trouble trying to retrieve the donkey.
Enlisting the help of his neighbors, they began to haul dirt to bury the old donkey in the well and put it out of its misery. Realizing what was happening, the donkey at first cried and wailed bitterly. But as the farmer and his neighbors continued shoveling, and the dirt hit its back, a thought struck the donkey. It suddenly dawned on it that every time a shovel load of dirt landed on its back, it should simply shake it off and step up! It wasn’t long before the old donkey, battered and exhausted, stepped triumphantly over the wall of that well, leaving us important lessons about overcoming adversity in our own lives.
Are you stuck in a hole? Perhaps, a deep hole of failure, debt, abandonment, or loneliness? Are you flat on your face—from a false step or a misstep? Are your dreams and new year resolutions already mired in the pits? Instead of feeling sorry for yourself or dwelling on what got you there, quickly shake off the dirt, step on it and get out.
Life is not a straight road. It bends, rises, dips, and sometimes breaks beneath our feet. Adversity is not a stranger to anyone—it comes in many forms: loss, failure, rejection, sickness, betrayal, financial struggle, or delayed dreams. Yet history and everyday experience teach us a powerful truth: adversity does not define us; our response to it does.
Here are few things to do to help you overcome adversity like the donkey did:
1. ACCEPT THE REALITY OF ADVERSITY
The first step in overcoming hardship is accepting that it is part of the human journey. Many people suffer twice—first from the problem itself and second from resisting the reality of it. Acceptance is not surrender; it is clarity. When we acknowledge the challenge, we position ourselves to confront it wisely rather than emotionally.
Storms are not permanent. They pass. And often, they leave the air clearer than before.
2. DEVELOP INNER RESILIENCE
Resilience is the ability to bounce back after difficulty. It is not something we are born with fully formed—it is built through experience. Just as muscles grow through resistance, character grows through challenges.
Resilient people:
• Maintain hope even when outcomes are uncertain.
• Focus on what they can control.
• Refuse to let one setback define their entire story.
• Every obstacle you overcome strengthens your capacity for the next one.
3. CHANGE YOUR PERSPECTIVE
Adversity can either be viewed as a prison or a classroom. When we shift our perspective, we begin to see lessons hidden within pain. Failure teaches humility. Loss teaches value. Delay teaches patience. Rejection teaches redirection.
Often, what feels like a setback is actually preparation. Many breakthroughs are born in moments that once felt like breakdowns.
4. SEEK SUPPORT, NOT ISOLATION
Hard times can tempt us to withdraw. But healing and strength often come through community—friends, family, mentors, or faith communities. Sharing your burden does not make you weak; it makes you human.
No one overcomes life alone. Even the strongest trees survive storms because of the forest around them.
5. MAINTAIN FAITH AND HOPE
Hope is a powerful force. It keeps the heart alive when circumstances seem dead. Whether rooted in faith, personal conviction, or belief in a better tomorrow, hope fuels endurance.
Darkness may be deep, but it cannot extinguish a determined light.
6. TAKE ACTION—EVEN SMALL STEPS
Adversity can feel overwhelming. The key is not solving everything at once but taking small, consistent steps forward. Progress, however slow, is still progress.
Action restores confidence. Movement breaks paralysis. Each step reminds you that you are not powerless.
7. TRANSFORM PAIN INTO PURPOSE
Some of the most impactful people in history turned their greatest struggles into their greatest strengths. Adversity can deepen compassion, sharpen wisdom, and ignite purpose. Your story of survival may become someone else’s blueprint for hope.
Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt—especially when you’re down. The key to getting out of the hole is a determination to not let it bury you, but to shake off the dirt and take a step up. You may be knocked down, but not knocked out. God will give you the strength. Cry out to Him; He will transform your troubles and setbacks into stepping stones:
Adversity is not the end of your story—it is a chapter. It may be painful, confusing, or exhausting, but it is not permanent. Within every trial lies the seed of growth, strength, and transformation.
“The Lord hears His people when they call to Him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; He rescues those whose spirits are crushed. The righteous person faces many troubles, but the Lord comes to the rescue each time” (Psalm 34:17-19; NLT).
