Peptic Ulcer Disease - By Dr Sydney Mpisa filmed by ZNBC.

Peptic ulcer disease happens when acid breaks through the stomach or duodenal lining, causing painful open sores. The usual culprits? H. pylori infection and long-term NSAID use.

- Symptoms like burning epigastric pain, bloating, or nausea shouldn’t be ignored, especially red flags like black stools or vomiting blood.

The good news? Ulcers are preventable and treatable with early diagnosis, H. pylori eradication, medication review, and healthy lifestyle choices.

Protect your gut, act early, and keep complications off the table.

Disorders of Gut–Brain Interaction (DGBI)

When your gut and brain aren’t on the same wavelength, symptoms show up, even without visible disease.

Bloating, abdominal pain, altered bowel habits? It’s real, it’s common, and it’s treatable. With the right gastroenterology care, diet tweaks, and stress control, balance is possible.

- Listen to your gut. Support the brain–gut axis.
- Book a GI consult and take control of your digestive health.

2025 RECOGNITION AWARDS.

Recognising the hard work and dedication of healthcare professionals through an award is a meaningful approach to motivate and encourage them to consistently provide high-quality care to the patients they serve daily.

While it is true that a select few individuals may be honored with these prestigious awards for their exceptional contributions, it is essential to remember that the true major winner in this scenario is the hospital as a whole, which benefits from the collective efforts of its entire staff.

Each and every worker, regardless of whether they receive formal recognition or not, puts forth an admirable 100% effort in their roles, striving to ensure the well-being of all patients.

However, due to the limited number of awards available, we are only able to highlight and celebrate the achievements of a few standout individuals, making it all the more important to acknowledge the overall commitment and dedication displayed by the entire healthcare team.

This Week’s Departmental Class.

This week, the Paediatrician Department aligned its topic on Neonatal Respiratory Distress Syndrome (NRDS), a serious neonatal pulmonary condition caused by insufficient pulmonary surfactant. Surfactant maintains alveolar stability; without it, lung expansion is compromised, making effective breathing difficult from the very first breaths of life.

Key Risk Factors
- Prematurity & low birth weight (major risk)
- Neonatal sepsis
- Male s*x
- Gestational diabetes
- Multiple gestation (twins, triplets, etc.)
- Caesarean section delivery

Signs & Symptoms
- Fast or labored breathing (tachypnea)
- Chest retractions (use of accessory respiratory muscles)
- Nasal flaring
- Expiratory grunting
- Cyanosis (bluish lips/skin due to hypoxia)
- Apnea (pauses in breathing)

Clinical Takeaway
Early recognition is critical. With timely NICU support, oxygen therapy, CPAP, mechanical ventilation, and surfactant replacement therapy, clinical outcomes improve significantly.

Future-focused neonatal care saves tiny lives. Early action, close monitoring, evidence-based management, that’s the standard

At Royal Hospital, building cohesion, staying informed, and levelling up patient care is the focus.

Heart Rhythm Disorders & Heart Failure

An abnormal cardiac rhythm (arrhythmia) is a significant yet often overlooked contributor to heart failure. When the heart rate is excessively fast, abnormally slow, or irregular, cardiac output is compromised. Prolonged rhythm disturbances can progressively weaken the myocardium, ultimately leading to heart failure.

Mr. Mulenga is recovering well following successful treatment under the care of Dr. Radwan, our Consultant Cardiologist. We’re encouraged by his positive progress and remain committed to delivering patient-centered, evidence-based cardiac care every step of the way.

Institutions thrive when strong systems are built through purposeful, high-impact meetings.

We were honored to host representatives from the Zambian Cancer Society, alongside partners from Canada, the USA, France and across Zambia.

The visit focused on strengthening continuity of care for oncology patients and developing sustainable strategies to enhance public awareness, early detection, and cancer prevention. Together, we are aligning systems, sharing expertise, and advancing solutions that ensure no oncology patient is left behind.

Royal Hospital remains committed to continuous collaboration with partners, keeping patient-centered care at the core of everything we do.

Heart attacks are a serious medical emergency, and when they’re not managed fast and right, outcomes can change lives. That’s why our medical team stays locked in. 🤍

This week, medical departments came together for a focused clinical session on acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) management, led by our Cardiologist, Dr. Radwan. From early recognition to rapid intervention, every step matters.

At our hospital, care isn’t siloed. We collaborate clinic by clinic, treating the whole patient, not just the heart. Smarter teamwork. Faster decisions. Better outcomes.
