AL CARE
(A) Definition of focused antenatal care. 5%
Focused antenatal care is a goal oriented approach to antenatal care that emphasizes the quality of care rather than to help women have good pregnancy outcomes.
(B) AIMs of Antenatal Care. 5% for any 5
Developing a partnership between the woman and professionals involved in her care ensuring that she has continuity of care.
Ensure good health, and where possible early detection and treatment of abnormalities which may affect her health or that of her baby.
Preparation for labour and a safe, normal delivery that is a pleasurable, fulfilling experience for both the mother and her partner.
Health Education to promote the maintenance and where necessary the improvement of health in pregnancy
Provision of education for parenthood.
Preparation for successful breastfeeding or artificial feeding if that is the mothers informal choice.
Education for planned parenthood.
(C) History taking during the first visit. 5%
The purpose of this visit is to introduce Marjorie to the maternity service. This should take the form of a friendly discussion with her, aimed at assessing her emotionally, socially, medically and obstetrically. She should be given a friendly greeting and made to feel welcome when she arrives at the clinic.
Social History: (10% for any 5)
The social aspect of history taking providing facts for tracing the patient should she default from the clinic. As such the following details should be recorded.
Full name: Addressing her by name promotes good nurse patient relationship
Address: (Village, Chief, District) and telephone number for each follow up.
Marital status: some single mothers may be unsupported and may need special help and understanding and referral to a social worker.
Age: The age of the client is important. The ideal age for efficient reproductive, performance is between 19 and 25 years. Pregnancy occurring when too young or too late carries with it great danger.
