5 habits to help you start training for happiness this weekend
By Alex Nottingham, JD, MBA, DrBicuspid.com contributing writer

June 12, 2020 -- In a talk at TEDxBloomington, psychologist Shawn Achor laid out a compelling explanation of why the conventional path to success will never lead you to happiness. We've been sold the wrong idea that success leads to happiness. However, it is happiness and positivity that lead us to achieve more.

How can you train for happiness? Try to inculcate a positive mindset in the present moment, rather than tying your happiness to a future "success" event such as a hitting a goal.

Adopt the habits below to trigger the "happiness advantage."

1. Gratitude

Make a habit of reminding yourself daily about two or three things that you should be grateful for. Conscious and consistent gratitude will recalibrate your mind to see the glass as half full rather than half empty.

2. Regular exercise

Hitting the gym a few times a week does a lot more than sculpting a pair of steely arms. It promotes discipline and helps us appreciate how our behavior has a direct impact on our happiness and success.

3. Meditation

Meditation helps us hit the reset button and refocuses our attention and energy on aspects that are truly important. It calms us down, helps us handle pressure, and brings about a measurable improvement in our ability to focus on the task at hand.

4. Maintain a journal

Writing your thoughts down can be incredibly therapeutic. You should strive to write about one positive experience every day. It will allow you to relive the moment, while also serving as a reassuring reminder of hope and that life isn't all that bad.

5. Practice kindness

Extending kindness to others is the core driver of overall well-being. A simple act of leaving a thank you note for someone has the potential to transform your perspective and theirs. Conscious kindness profoundly affects life satisfaction and our ability to manage stress.

Research:
Exposure to childhood adversity could be an important predictive factor for poor dental health. As oral health is an important part of a child's overall health status, approaches that seek to improve dental health across the life-course should start with safe and nurturing childhoods free from abuse and neglect. Given the growing role that dental professionals have in identifying violence and abuse, it seems appropriate to raise awareness in the field of dentistry of the potential for individuals to have suffered adverse childhood experiences, and the mechanisms linking childhood adversity to poor dental health.

The self-isolation that has been thrust upon us should be seen as a real opportunity for growth. We can begin to focus on who we truly are and who we want to become. We must each take this time to explore how we want to improve ourselves – our minds, our bodies, our spirits, and our interpersonal relationships. This will ultimately lead to greater self-knowledge and therefore a closer relationship with one’s self.

I talk about sugar with my patients and colleagues all the time. Although sugar is sweet, and many people may crave its sweetness, sugar can be a poison. It could be a poison that affects every epithelial cell in the lining of our mucosal tissues.

As dentists, we know from our clinical experience that sugar is the "No. 1 enemy" feeding the bacteria causing tooth decay, and this is backed by a 2015 study in the Journal of Dental Research (October 2015, Vol. 94:10, pp. 1341-1347). But, sugar is more than a decay starter. A study published on March 23, 2018, in Science showed how sugar may be the primary insult to the gut. While the researchers used mice in their study, they also suggested how these changes could occur in all mucosal tissues in humans.

Leaks

The authors of the Science study showed blood sugar can break down the gut lining and allow junk to leak into the circulatory system. They also explained that sugar increases gut dysbiosis. Most important, this study helps disprove a long-held conclusion that fats were the real problem causing a break down in the gut lining.
“Sugar is a controllable insult to the gut.”

Once toxic elements leak into the circulatory system, chronic inflammation occurs that can cause a compromised immune system and various forms of chronic disease. Some of these chronic diseases include obesity, diabetes, nonalcoholic fatty liver, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, neurodegeneration, and dental diseases.

While those researchers studied blood sugar as an insult to the gut, they also suggested that sugars in foods could cause similar problems. In addition, the investigators showed that sugar could change the expression of more than 1,000 genes in epithelial cells throughout the body. These changes included several genes that involved various metabolic pathways.

7 essentials

When my patients ask (and even sometimes when they don't), I tell them to keep these seven essentials in mind:

Tooth decay and periodontal disease are chronic diseases.
An unhealthy gut can be a major factor leading to an unhealthy mouth.
Based on this study, sugar is a major insult to the gut.
Sugar may also affect the epithelial lining of all mucosal tissues.
Blood sugar must be monitored and regulated, and dietary sugar must be reduced significantly to avoid a major insult to the gut and mucosal tissues.
To successfully treat tooth decay and periodontal disease, the gut must be made healthy.
The gut must be treated at the same time the mouth is treated.

Then the patients can take it from there. I remind them to be careful with the sugars they eat and that they can stay around in the blood system. Sugar is a controllable insult to the gut.

New studies link perio health to kidney health
By Theresa Pablos, DrBicuspid.com associate editor

August 15, 2018 -- Periodontal health has again been linked to kidney health in two new studies presented at the recent 2018 International Association of Dental Research (IADR) meeting in London. The studies found a significant association between chronic kidney disease and signs of poor periodontal health.

In one study, periodontal inflammation was associated with a decrease in kidney function, and in the other, patients with worse clinical attachment levels (CAL) were significantly more likely to have worse kidney function in the future. The research adds to the growing body of research that demonstrates the intricate relationship between oral and systemic health.

History: A healthy 8-year-old boy was referred to a pediatric dentist by a family dentist. His mother reported that her son lost tooth approximately two years ago. After the tooth exfoliated, she noticed some abnormal tissue in the area that progressively grew in size. She consulted with the family dentist, who referred the patient to the pediatric dentist.

Extraoral exam: Within normal limits.

Intraoral exam: The patient had a red, soft, nonpedunculated mass over the left mandibular alveolar ridge at the place of the canine. There was no pain upon palpation.

The dentist ordered a panoramic radiograph.

I have developed a good eye for cosmetics thanks to Dr Michael Morell (practical friend of mine), and the this testimony can be trusted of how to help achieve satisfaction from relatively cheap materials.

Synopsis:
I have been restoring broken down dentitions with composite very successfully for over 30 years mainly due to the fact many of my patients simply could not afford conventional treatments with porcelain. I started out many years ago building up badly damaged single teeth and that worked well. It soon evolved out of desperation that I would do a whole arch usually lower teeth against an upper complete denture and that seemed to work well. The fact patients did so well with single arch rehabs I started doing both arches about 12-15 years ago and they have worked well. Many of my patients were older in their 60s and 70s and I have found they did well and were very appreciative that we could keep their teeth as many were advised by other dentists that their teeth were not restorable. Viewing this course will allow dentists to learn about an alternative treatment method to restore dentitions and save many teeth that traditionally would be lost since many patients can not afford porcelain.
