What do my blood pressure numbers mean?

When you measure your blood pressure, the numbers tell us if you are hypertensive or not and if you are hypertensive, they tell us how well-controlled your blood pressure is.

I know when my blood pressure is high......

This is one commonly held but false belief by many people living with hypertension (High blood pressure). Unfortunately, most people living with hypertension will not feel or show any symptoms until damage has already been done to vital organs such as the eyes, brain, heart, and kidneys. This damage can be sudden and dramatic such as a stroke or heart attack or may be gradual such as vision loss, nerve damage, or kidney damage.

So while some people will experience some symptoms associated with raised blood pressure such as blurred vision, headache or dizziness, most of us will not feel a thing. The only way to know what your blood pressure is right now is to have it measured using the correct technique.
