FUNERAL NOTICE

UTHs–Children’s Hospital Mourns the Passing of Professor Kopano Mukelabai

The UTHs- Children’s Hospital with deep sorrow mourns the passing of Professor Kopano Mukelabai, an esteemed Paediatrician, mentor, and long-serving member of our medical community. His passing is a profound loss to our hospital, the paediatric fraternity, and the nation.

Professor Mukelabai dedicated his life to the care of children and the mentorship of generations of doctors. From his early training in Toronto to his decades of service at UTH, he exemplified professionalism, humility, and compassionate care. His calm demeanour, deep voice, and reassuring presence were cherished by patients and colleagues alike. His clinical expertise, particularly in paediatric emergencies, saved countless lives and inspired all who had the privilege to work with him.

Beyond his clinical contributions, Professor Mukelabai was an extraordinary teacher. He was deeply committed to nurturing medical students and postgraduate trainees, often leading bedside tutorials, assessments, and mentorship sessions. His devotion to teaching continued until his final days, leaving an indelible mark on the medical community.

Professor Mukelabai was not only a physician but also a beacon of guidance and inspiration. His legacy will endure through the many doctors he mentored and the lives he touched.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Professor Mukelabai’s children, grandchildren, and extended family, as well as to the wider medical fraternity.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Yesterday marked a proud and exciting moment at the Children’s Hospital as we officially opened the refurbished Admission Ward!

Weeks of tireless dedication and collaboration between the FNB Zambia Operations Team and the University Teaching Hospitals - Children's Hospital staff culminated in this transformation, and we are sincerely grateful to the FNB Zambia Foundation for making it possible.

During this period, we also had the opportunity to learn more about the Foundation’s work and its meaningful investments in health and community development.

This refurbishment will have a lasting impact by improving the care environment, comfort and dignity of the children we serve, while supporting our frontline teams to deliver quality care.

The handover, witnessed with the support of the Ministry of Health Zambia, reflects the power of partnerships in strengthening public healthcare delivery.

We cannot wait to see the smiles on the children’s faces as they experience this renewed space!!

We are off to a good start at the beginning of 2026 as we received a donation from Lusaka Round Table No. 15 to our Hearing and Speech Centre.

The Centre provides essential services including ear and hearing screening, hearing aid services, and speech therapy, supporting early diagnosis and improved communication outcomes.

For many years, Lusaka Round Table No. 15 has been a proud long-term partner, steadfastly supporting our efforts and contributing to lasting impact.

Today’s donation included laptops for our Audiology Unit, essential for patient screening and data storage, otoscopes for ear screening, as well as assorted toys and stationery supplies to support speech therapy sessions.

The gesture was topped off with a cake for the team, making the visit even more special.

We are truly grateful for the continued commitment and generosity!

As we close the year, we reflect with gratitude on what has truly been a remarkable journey for the University Teaching Hospitals - Children's Hospital.

One of the year’s most meaningful highlights was the successful completion of two paediatric renal transplants,a historic step forward in specialised renal care for children.

While renal transplant surgeries were also conducted among adults during this period, , these two cases marked a major step forward in specialised renal care for children.

Lubuto was one of the children who benefited from this life-changing intervention, made possible through the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Health Zambia and the American College of Surgeons (ACS).

Ahead of his surgery, we had the opportunity to sit down with Lubuto and his father to reflect on their journey. His father selflessly stepped forward as the kidney donor, an extraordinary act of love that made this transplant possible. We commend the entire family for their strength, trust, and resilience throughout the process.

Despite ongoing health challenges, Lubuto went on to sit for his Grade Nine examinations and passed. When asked what he was looking forward to the most, Lubuto simply responded: “a successful transplant.”

The transplant procedures were carried out at the University Teaching Hospital- Adult Hospital through strong multidisciplinary collaboration, with surgical expertise provided by Dr. Aggrey Mweemba and team.

At the Children’s Hospital, the paediatric cases were prepared, coordinated, and followed up by the Paediatric Renal team led by Dr. Chisambo Mwaba, whose dedication and continuity of care were central to the success of both transplants.

As the year comes to an end, we are proud of our children, our teams, and our partners.

We close the year encouraged, hopeful, and committed to advancing specialised care for children in Zambia.
