Speech and Language: What you need to know

Both speech and language are critical to communication. But are speech and language the same?

The answer is no.

Speech refers to the sounds used to make words. It involves the use of our articulators, the lips, teeth, tongue, jaw and voice to produce sounds or words.

Language is how we use words to express ourselves. Language can be spoken, written or signed. It involves using grammar, vocabulary and appropriate word order.

FOREIGN ACCENT SYNDROME:
a very rare disorder of speech where a patient suddenly starts to speak with a foreign accent. The onset is sudden and the affected person has never been to or lived in the place of origin of the foreign accent.
Causes?
1. Stroke
2. Head injury
3. Brain damage of any other cause
Is there treatment?
Yes, speech therapy and cognitive behaviour therapy are among the common recommendations.
