*World Malaria Day 2025 | Commemorated in Katete District, Eastern Province.*
Today, Zambia joins the global community in commemorating World Malaria Day under the theme “Malaria Ends with Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite.”
Delivering a speech on behalf of the Minister of Health Hon. Dr. Elijah Muchima, the Katete District Commissioner, Mr. Raphael Phiri, highlighted the country’s continued progress in the fight against malaria.
Zambia recorded a 16% reduction in malaria cases and a 30% decline in malaria-related deaths in 2024, a testament to the effectiveness of our malaria control strategies.
Katete District itself has made significant progress, with malaria cases dropping from 48,297 in 2023 to 36,737 in 2024, and three health facilities now in the malaria elimination phase.
These gains are the result of targeted interventions including:
• Distribution of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets
• Indoor residual spraying
• Larval source management
• Ongoing deployment of over 25,000 community health workers across the country
However, the withdrawal of key donor-supported projects presents a challenge. To sustain our progress, we must reinvest in local solutions, reimagine innovative approaches, and reignite collective action.
We urge all Zambians to continue supporting malaria elimination efforts:
• Sleep under a treated mosquito net every night
• Allow health teams to spray your homes
• Pregnant women, take your preventive treatment
• Seek testing and treatment early
The commemoration attracted Katete District traditional leaders Chieftainess Kawaza, Chief Katumba and Chief Bang'ombe of the Chewa People and have since pledged to continue the malaria elimination fight
Together, with strong political will, strategic partnerships, and community involvement, we will achieve a malaria-free Zambia.
