VAZ CALLS FOR INDEPENDENT REGULATOR AS VETERINARY SECTOR SUFFERS SYSTEMIC NEGLECT

By: Thomas Afroman Mwale

The Veterinary Association Of Zambia (Vaz) Has Called For Urgent Regulatory Reform To Strengthen The Livestock Sector, Emphasizing The Need For A Dedicated Authority To Oversee Veterinary Medicines And Allied Substances.

Speaking During A Press Briefing, Vaz President Dr. Malcolm Chiyoba Stated That Veterinary Regulation Has Lagged Behind Human Health Services, Thereby Limiting Access To Essential Medicines And Hindering Sector Growth.

Dr. Chiyoba Explained That The Veterinary Industry Currently Operates Under A Regulatory Framework Primarily Designed For Human Health Products.

He Argued That Without An Independent Veterinary Regulator, Zambia’s Livestock Industry Will Continue To Experience Gaps In Service Delivery And Limited Access To Critical Products.

He Added That The Association’s Concerns Arise Amid Parliamentary Discussions On The Medicines And Allied Substances Draft Amendment Bill, Which Vaz Believes Fails To Adequately Address The Needs Of The Veterinary Sector.

Meanwhile, Dr. Chiyoba Urged The Ministry Of Finance To Increase Funding For Veterinary Staffing And Infrastructure, Citing The Ministry Of Fisheries And Livestock’s 2026 Proposed Budget Allocation Of Just 1.8% Of The National Budget As Evidence Of Systemic Neglect.
