🚨 STOP! READ THIS BEFORE YOU REACH FOR THE AMOXYCILLIN! 🚨
Parents in Lusaka, we need to talk! We’ve noticed a huge trend of "self-prescribing" Amoxycillin the moment a child starts coughing. While we know you want your little ones to feel better fast, using antibiotics the wrong way is doing more harm than good.
Here is what every Zambian parent needs to know about that cough:
‼️What exactly is a cough? 🤔
Think of a cough as your child’s *Bodyguard*. It is a natural "protective reflex." Its only job is to kick out irritants, mucus, or foreign objects from the airway to keep the lungs clear. A cough isn't always the enemy—it’s the cleanup crew!
‼️Not all coughs are the same! 🦠
Coughs generally fall into two camps:
• Infectious: Caused by germs like viruses or bacteria.
• Non-Infectious:* Caused by things like dust, cold morning air in Chamba Valley, or even smoke.
‼️The "Amoxy" Mistake: Antibiotics vs. Viruses 🚫
This is the most important part: Antibiotics (like Amoxycillin) ONLY kill bacteria.
• Viruses: Most childhood coughs and flu are caused by viruses. Antibiotics do nottouch viruses.
• Allergies & Irritants: If your child is coughing because of dust or pollen, an antibiotic is useless.
⚠️ The Danger: Giving antibiotics when they aren't needed makes bacteria stronger. This is called Antibiotic Resistance. If we overuse them now, they might not work when your child actually has a serious bacterial infection!
What should you do instead?
• Keep them hydrated with plenty of water.
• Use home remedies like warm water with honey (for children over 1 year).
• Consult a Paediatrician:Let a professional decide if it’s bacteria or just a passing virus.
Don’t gamble with your child’s health. Keep the Amoxycillin on the shelf unless a doctor says otherwise!🇿🇲🩺
