Let's talk about Tongue tie AKA Akalimba
Ankyloglossia: Signs, Symptoms, and Simple Solutions
Tongue-tie, medically known as ankyloglossia, is a condition that some people are born with. It happens when the small band of tissue that connects the bottom of the tongue to the floor of the mouth is unusually short, thick, or tight. This tethering restricts the tongue's range of motion, which can lead to challenges with feeding, articulation, and oral hygiene.
In infants, the most common sign of a tongue-tie is :
difficulty with breastfeeding. Because the tongue cannot move freely, the baby may have trouble latching, leading to clicking sounds during feeding, ni**le pain for the mother, or poor weight gain for the child.
For older children and adults, a restricted tongue can make it difficult to pronounce certain sounds, such as "t," "d," "z," "s," "th," "n," and "l."
Some adults only realize they have the condition when they find they cannot stick their tongue out past their lower front teeth.
Treatment for a tongue-tie is usually very simple. A quick procedure called a frenotomy /frenulectomy is performed to release the tight tissue.
While tongue-tie is a physical condition you are born with and not related to any viral infection, maintaining a healthy mouth is vital for everyone.
