June 7: Rest
Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.
Mark 6:31
The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to Him all they had done and taught. Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, He said to them, βCome with Me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some restβ.
When was the last time you had a proper rest? That does not mean a day of housework, running errands, studying, attending to the needs of your family, doing your church duties, and when you are so exhausted that you just sleep. All those things are probably important, and we should make time to do them.
We need time when we are not thinking about our work or our household responsibilities. When we are completely relaxed and at rest in and with God, talking with Him, feeling His presence, and listening to Him. We all need that, even though many of us may not have done that for many years. It is surprisingly difficult for many of us!
Each of us has different ways to truly relax; perhaps going for a leisurely walk, gardening, reading something that is not intellectually demanding, playing some sport, or making music. It may mean just staring at the sky and having naps during the day.
When we are totally relaxed, we might hear God more clearly and really feel Godβs love and grace for us. Of course, God can communicate His love and grace for us while we are busy serving Him, but when we are relaxed, we are more likely to hear and feel more deeply what God wants to give us.
