Sachibondu Health Centre

Sachibondu Health Centre Sachibondu Mission Health Centre is located in a remote and rural region of North West Zambia.

A small team of nurses are doing all they can to bring hope and medical care to thousands of people who have no access to a hospital. Every week day a variety of clinics are held for the hundreds of patients that come through the doors. Clinics for under 5's provide health checks and vaccinations against disease. HIV + AIDS awareness, testing & education is reducing the rate of new infections. Foo

d nutrition classes and cookery lessons are helping families overcome malnutrition. Regular TB outreach clinics are educating and treating many with the disease. Antenatal clinics, midwives, trained birth assistants and a dedicated delivery ward are saving the lives of first time mums. A laboratory technician is screening daily for infections including Malaria and lives are being saved.

Another busy mobile clinic carried out by our staff in a remote place near us!
Without these clinics, SO many families would really struggle to access the healthcare they need. We are grateful to Karuna Action who support us monthly to enable these mobile clinics to happen!

We are so grateful to those who support us to enable us to buy a supply of formula milk each month, which means babies like this beauty will still be able to physically thrive even though she doesn't have her mother. In the last year, several babies have been supported through the first year of their life because of this provision and we are so grateful, as are their families!πŸ™Œ

Despite Covid, our nutrition classes continue. We come across some very malnourished mothers and babies and so we teach them how to cook nutritious meals with what they have and we supply them with some of the nutritious foods they cant afford. Today Mama Gladys was teaching them to cook mulengu (a local leaf much the same as spinach) mixed with ground nuts and ground kapenta (dried then cooked, then pounded, fish.)
This time of year is difficult to grow veg because of the heavy rains so this nutrition class is super helpful to some In the community that need a bit of extra help.

We want to give a big shout out and THANK YOU to Karuna Action for their regular support. It is with their help that makes these classes possible!

Today we Staff at Sachibondu RHC said Thank you and Farewell to Mrs Patching as our Administrator!
She served as administrator for 7 years with passion, love and hard work! She took the clinic from where it was and raised the standard, pioneered the vision for it to become a hospital and today we are so close to opening officially as a hospital! She has been so much more than an administrator, but a mentor, friend and mother too. We are going to miss her immensely but wish her well in all her future endeavours. We welcome Mrs Burston as the new administrator and look forward to this next season of seeing a vision become a reality in this facility!

In all honesty Zambia has been living in relative ignorant bliss the last year when it comes to Covid-19. Our clinic spent time preparing for potential patients back in March 2020 only to find it didn't materialise. Up until December last year there had only been 4 cases in our district.

But with new variants here too the cases of Covid-19 have risen and spread hugely this month. Predictions suggest Zambia will have more cases and deaths in January than they had the entire year last year. And with only 25 vaccinations having been given in TOTAL in all low-income countries combined (compared to 39m in wealthier ones) we are way off immunity becoming a reality.

We have been designated as a Covid-19 isolation centre for our entire district. I cannot express how complex and difficult it is trying to facilitate this effectively and safely when we only have a staff of 5 nurses and 1 clinical officer and not enough furniture, trolleys, equipment, bedding etc to kit out multiple separate spaces to keep patients and staff safe.

We know of several confirmed cases in our district, none at Sach so far fortunately, but with it currently taking up to a week to get swab results we are having to think incredibly strategically about how we manage this situation and contain the spread.

We just ask that you think of us, pray for us, maybe send some words of encouragement for our staff and if anyone would like to sponsor some temporary staff that we can train in cleaning, screening and educating anyone that walks through our gates we'd be extremely grateful.

Happy New Year to One and All.πŸŽ†πŸŽ‰

At Sachibondu we we are stepping up our testing for Covid-19 as we are now in possession of testing kits that came from the government. Our lab technicians are testing all of the patients that come through our doors in an effort to keep Covid out.

We are sad to announce that our hospital administrator and her husband, tested positive for Covid-19 this week having travelled down country over Christmas. They are self isolating at home and resting lots. Those that pray, please pray for their recovery to full health.

Thank you to all who support us at Sachibondu RHC, we value your support enormously. We look forward to continuing our hard work in providing the surrounding communities with healthcare and love whilst improving our services all the time in 2021.

Our clinical meeting got interactive this week and we had scenarios where our staff had to deal with a collapsed and unconcious patient. At Sachibondu we strive to keep improving our knowledge, wisdom and skills in patient care. As we move towards becoming a hospital we are working hard at improving in all areas of our care. Thank you Joanna Lake (resident missionary Midwife at Sachibondu) for an exciting and interactive clinical meeting this week!

We ordered new t-shirts for our SMAG'S.. SMAG stands for Safe Motherhood Action Group. These ladies work in their villages, looking after any pregnant women, checking on them throughout their pregnancies and they help with our antenatal clinics each week. Then when mothers go into labour, they accompany them in to us and help deliver the babies. These women are invaluable to our community. We think their new t-shirts look Great!.. They were also thrilled with them, despite the lack of smiles in the photograph! πŸ˜‚
