SHORTAGE OF INSULIN IN PUBLIC HEALTH FACILITIES TRIGGERS HIKE IN PRICE OF THE PRODUCT

Drug Store and Pharmacy owners are reported to have taken advantage of the shortage of insulin in government hospitals and clinics by manipulating prices beyond the reach of a common person.

Zambia is currently experiencing a shortage in insulin supply due to the coronavirus which has resulted in a cut in the supply chain and patients are being asked to buy on their own.

Binga Binga is Diabetes Association of Zambia President and explains that some private entities have escalated the price of the product to as high as k150 per 500mils, making it hard for people who depend on insulin as they need this lifesaving supplement on a daily basis but cannot access it.

Dr. Binga tells phoenix news that because many people depend for free insulin from public health centers, they are now suffering as they cannot afford to procure from private entities.

And when reached for a comment on the matter, Ministry of Health Spokesperson Abel Kabalo opted to remain mute.

Insulin is a hormone that controls sugar levels and is also involved in the storage of fat in diabetic patients.

Never be ashamed of having a mental illness. Mental illness is a disorder of the brain, just as diabetes is a disorder of the pancreas & asthma is a disorder of the lungs. Having a mental illness doesn’t make you a bad person, & never let anyone tell you it is.

As a Type 1 diabetic I have learn to match my actions
with my words and beliefs. Diabetes has taught me to
be grateful for every situation because any moment that
situation can changed for better or worse. Then I
discovered faith. Diabetes is a gift!
