“Seeing my son smile is my biggest dream,” said Anele, the mother of four-month-old Mthabisi, who was born with a cleft lip. At first, Anele was shocked and worried about her son’s future, but she soon embraced him with love and courage. She feared how society would treat him and longed for him to grow up confident and free from bullying. Her hope was renewed when she learned that CURE Children’s Hospital of Zimbabwe, with support from Smile Train, could provide the life-changing surgery her son needed. Today, Anele is filled with gratitude, knowing that Mthabisi’s new smile is not only beautiful but also a symbol of a brighter, transformed future.

Nine-year-old Kudzaiishe gently comforts her mother as she prepares for surgery. Born with bowed legs that curve outward at the knees, standing has always made her legs appear far apart. “I first noticed her condition when she was four,” recalls her mother, Nyakudyano. “The doctors did X-rays and recommended surgery, but at the time, her father and I were unemployed and we couldn’t afford it.” Without treatment, Kudzaiishe’s condition persisted.

The deformity causes pain in her knees after long walks, limiting her ability to run and play freely with friends. For years, this weighed heavily on both her and her family. But hope arrived when Nyakudyano’s sister told her about CURE Children's Hospital of Zimbabwe.

At last, Kudzaiishe was brought to the hospital, where she was scheduled for surgery at no cost to her parents.

Theophylus was born with severe lower limb conditions, but his mother, Florence, chose gratitude for his survival and stood firm in her unconditional love despite rejection and hurtful remarks from some relatives. Through resilience, she secured a wheelchair that enabled Theo to attend school under inclusive education laws, though he still faced teasing and accessibility challenges. Hope came when Florence learned about CURE Children’s Hospital of Zimbabwe, where Theo finally received specialised treatment at no cost. Today, he walks with prosthetics, plays, and lives with newfound confidence, an answered prayer for his mother.

Did you know?

A cleft lip happens when a baby’s upper lip doesn’t fully form during pregnancy, leaving a small gap or split.

Why does it matter?

Without treatment, children may struggle to feed properly, which can cause malnutrition. As they grow, many also face low self-esteem and emotional pain because of their appearance.

But here’s the good news!

At CURE Children’s Hospital of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, a cleft lip can be repaired completely free of charge through surgery.
This life-changing operation not only helps children eat and grow well, but also restores their beautiful smiles and confidence.

For twelve years, Hansan walked on his hands and toes, born with feet that pointed downward. His mother, Sithulisile, tried everything, but treatment was too expensive, and he fell behind in school. “I sometimes wondered if my son was cursed,” she recalls. Then her brother-in-law told her about CURE Children’s Hospital of Zimbabwe, where Hansan received sponsored surgery. Today, he’s learning to walk upright, and every step brings him closer to his dream of becoming a teacher.

Joseph, now twelve, was born with bowed legs, a condition that made his knees curve outward and left a noticeable gap between them. His father, Bhaudhi, initially believed the problem would correct itself as Joseph grew, but instead, it worsened. Even after visiting the local hospital, where they were told it would resolve on its own, the pain and mobility challenges persisted.

Joseph often struggled after sitting for long periods or walking long distances, and his love for soccer was overshadowed by the discomfort it caused, forcing him to watch games from the sidelines. Hope began to fade until Bhaudhi’s co-worker told him about the life-changing sponsored surgeries at CURE Children’s Hospital of Zimbabwe. Overjoyed and relieved, Bhaudhi quickly booked an appointment, grateful for the opportunity he could never have afforded on his teacher’s salary.

Today, after his surgery, Joseph has healed and walks with straight legs.
