Windswept deformity is a condition in which one leg develops a bowed knee, while the other develops knock-knee, meaning one knee tilts inward while the other bends outward. This “windswept” appearance occurs when the growth plate near one knee slows down or stops producing new bone, while the other knee continues to grow normally.
There are several possible causes of windswept deformity, but the most common is rickets, a condition where bones fail to form properly due to a deficiency of calcium, vitamin D, or phosphate.

At CURE Zimbabwe, this condition can be treated free of charge for children and their caregivers. If you know a child who could benefit from treatment, please get in touch with us. To schedule an appointment, send the child’s details via SMS or WhatsApp to +263 772 696 481, or call us on +263 867 719 2320.

Here are some highlights from the week:

1. Child mentor Nomazwe spends time with children in the playroom, helping them learn and grow. For kids who are in the hospital for a long time, this is a chance to catch up on schoolwork and keep learning.

2. Malvin smiles for a photo in the ward. Even after several weeks of recovery, he has kept his cheerful spirit and bright smile.

3. Dennis walks in the ward as he practices with his new prosthesis. He has regained his mobility and feels more confident, thanks to the support and friendships he has found with other children.

4. Patience, a Dispensary Assistant at CURE Children's Hospital of Zimbabwe, prepares medication, which is an important part of each child’s recovery. Thanks to generous sponsors, all prescribed medicines are provided at no cost to children and their families.

Grethel was relieved when she found a hospital that could help her daughter Yaniza, especially after a difficult period for their family. Following the loss of her youngest child, getting medical care for Yaniza had been a challenge. Yaniza’s bow-leg condition worsened over time, limiting her ability to walk and play with other children, and often leaving her feeling left out. The family’s hopes were renewed when CURE Children’s Hospital of Zimbabwe accepted Yaniza for treatment. Thanks to the surgery she received there, Yaniza can now walk further and participate more fully in daily life.

Here are some highlights from this week:

1. CURE’s Executive Director, Jonathan Simpson, talks with Life Outreach International (LOI) representative John Yeatts during a hospital tour. LOI is partnering with CURE Zimbabwe to help the hospital reach more children in need, ensuring nothing stands in the way of life-changing surgeries and the hope they bring.

2. Guests at our ZITF stand pause for a portrait after an engaging session about CURE and the services we provide. Visit us at Hall 2A, Stand #15 and discover how lives are transformed through surgery and the gospel.

3. After a mostly cloudy morning, a burst of sunshine brought the playground to life as the children rushed out to play. In a short time, the kids know each other by name, sound, and movement, creating camaraderie and bonds that may even last beyond their stay.

4. Makanaka beams with joy as she continues her recovery in the hospital ward. After weeks of healing, forming friendships, and hearing the Gospel, she is preparing to return home, ready to share the love of Christ and her story.

When Nonhlanhla first held her son Unathi, she was not overwhelmed by fear. Instead, she knew that a cleft lip and palate could be treated and that her child’s journey was just beginning. Thanks to early referral and steady support at CURE Children’s Hospital, she learned how to feed and care for her son, even during tough times when he needed urgent help to recover his weight. As time went on, both mother and child grew stronger. Unathi gained the weight he needed, and Nonhlanhla became a confident, hands-on caregiver. Today, Unathi has been treated and discharged. He is healthy, smiling, and ready for a future full of hope.

Today marks five years since CURE Zimbabwe performed its first two corrective surgeries. What started as a small step has become an inspiring journey of healing and hope.

Since then, we have performed over 5,200 surgeries that have changed lives. Each surgery helps restore health, dignity, confidence, and new opportunities for children and their families. Our mission is rooted in healing the sick and preaching the gospel to everyone who comes through our doorstep.

Since opening our doors in 2021, CURE Zimbabwe has remained committed to providing specialised orthopaedic and plastic reconstructive surgeries for children aged 0–18. We treat a wide range of conditions, including clubfoot, bowed legs, knock knees, unhealed fractures, cleft lip and palate, and burn contractures.

As we mark this milestone, we remain grateful for how far we’ve come and hopeful for the many more lives still to be transformed.
