Midlands Diabetes Interest Group We raise awareness among people with diabetes, through the provision of support, education and practical advice in the community in which they live

According to Zimbabwe statistics, there were 600 670 cases of diabetes in Zimbabwe in the year 2013. In the whole world, there are 280 million people who have diabetes and it is estimated that 592 million people will be living with diabetes by the year 2035. However in Zimbabwe it is estimated that above 450,000 of adults have diabetes which is not diagnosed. Due to these facts, the Midlands Diabetes Interest Group wants to embark on training programmes to bring awareness to the thousands of people who may be affected by this condition and those who are prone to diabetes where prevention is possible. MidDIG offers comprehensive care of complex cases of diabetes and preventive management for patients with diabetes and attention to pre-diabetic conditions in the Midlands province. MidDIG offers services in nursing case management and education, and nutrition counseling. A collaborative effort will be developed to improve diabetes patients lifestyle and to engage them with entrepreneurial skills development for self-sustenance of those individuals affected by this condition.

We are still buzzing with excitement from our Camp in Gweru! This three-day event was a huge success, packed with activities from zumba and ball games to quad biking and in-depth educational sessions. The kids learned so much and had a blast getting clarification on all their burning questions.

We want to give a massive thank you to everyone who made this camp a reality. Your support means the world to us and, more importantly, to the children and families we serve.

A special thanks to our incredible sponsors and partners for their extraordinary generosity: SolidarMed Zimbabwe, Ministry of Health and Child Care, City of Gweru, International Diabetes Federation, Zimbabwe Diabetes Association, Panorama Global, Lili Grace Foundation, Gweru Specialist Children's Hospital, First Mutual Health, Friendship Bench - Zimbabwe, Lions Clubs International and Penplus partnership. Your support created a safe, educational, and fun environment for all our campers.

We also deeply appreciate the contributions from Harare Institute of Public Health, Size Inv Ta the Villag, Beam link, Booties Pharmacies, Diamond Pharmacy and Proffmed. Your donations were crucial to the camp's smooth operation and directly impacted the children's lives. We are immensely grateful to MkobaTeachers' College for providing us with a warm shelter and for their hospitable staff. Thank you to Padanga, you made our outing day beautiful and fun.

To our facilitators Tinotenda Dzikiti , Dr Mugari, Dr Chisema, Mirirai Chigova, Mercy Makono, we are ertenally grateful. Not forgetting Calvin CM Madula, you gave the kids hope and the strength to pick themselves up and move forward.

Thank you for your collective effort and for helping us empower these kids with confidence and a strong sense of community. We couldn't have done it without you, and we can't wait to partner with you again soon.

This week, NANGO Zimbabwe hosted a two-day exhibition event, and the MidDIG team attended. Various organizations showcased their important work in the province, and MidDIG, as always, offered blood sugar and blood pressure checks. Over 100 people showed up at our gazebo for screenings, indicating an overwhelming turnout. The event presented immense networking opportunities, which was a key takeaway. Our team engaged most of the organizations there, establishing possible areas for collaboration and partnership. Overall, the event was a success and ended on a high note with live band entertainment.

Despite the chilly Gweru weather last Friday, our diabetes class was nothing short of amazing! We had a fantastic turnout, right in the city centre, at the Itech clinic, with scores of people, eager to learn about diabetes complications and their profound impact on health – from the risks of blindness and kidney failure to limb amputation. Dr. L. Nyoni delivered an incredibly informative session, empowering everyone with vital knowledge for better diabetes management.
We extend our deepest gratitude to Lili Grace Foundation , for their invaluable partnership, which was instrumental in making this event a success, BPO Zimbabwe for ketone test strips and machine as well as Insulin for Life Australia for the generous insulin donation. Our sincere thanks also go to Dr. B. Dima for generously providing free doctor consultations, and to Mr. Chiwota and Mr. Msipa for offering compassionate counseling services to our attendees. Not forgetting the hearty vote of thanks from Dr. Leboho. It was a privilege to provide free diabetes education, blood sugar checks, and blood pressure screenings to our community.

Four wonderful days in Masvingo at the type one diabetes camp for the young diabetics. The focus was not only to bring these lovely people together but to build resilience and vindication to the challenging life associated with being born diabetic. The condition demands daily attention to survival detail and commitment and challenges to a growing child who must adhere to a lifestyle quite separate from the common likes and attentions of ordinary children. All the dangers that may impact severely on the growing child have increased disastrous consequences for diabetics. The world around diabetics is mostly unwelcome and very few people seem to care and understand this condition.
It was a highly successful camp at Leboho standards. Great appreciation to Dr. Mutengerere and the hardworking team at SolidarMed, the awesome presenters from Parerenyatwa, Friendship Bench, the Pediatric Dr Mureriwa, Dietician Thandeka and Ambassador Tino Dzikiti and our own MidDig Ngoni and Zvatapiwa were just superb.
The benefits of diabetes camps and let alone diabetes education are priceless. The support from sponsors and individuals was immense. Masvingo town is particularly clean, I loved Masvingo and wish our own town would pluck a leaf from them. The hospitality at the hosting Catholic hostels at Mucheke are worth mentioning.

The aim of the February diabetes class conducted in Gweru, was to equip diabetic (T1D) people with the necessary knowledge that they need to live a much better life with diabetes. The topic for the month of February was entrepreneurship. After realizing how much diabetic people are struggling to buy medication and healthier food stuffs we decided to kick start with a lesson on how they can overcome this hurdle.
Here are some key takeaways that were raised :
1. Embrace a growth mindset: Instead of solely focusing on expenses, diabetic individuals should explore income-generating opportunities.
2. Invest in yourself: View each dollar as a seed with the potential to grow into something bigger, enabling you to better manage your diabetic needs.
3. Find your niche: Identify unique business ideas that cater to the specific needs of the diabetic community.
4. Leverage your strengths: Explore opportunities to utilize your existing talents and skills to generate income.
5. Become an advocate: Consider pursuing ventures in organic food production or other areas that promote health and well-being within the diabetic community.
By following these tips and fostering an entrepreneurial spirit, T1D individuals can not only achieve financial independence but also empower and inspire others on their journey.

Today we'll remind each other of the complications that we are prone to as diabetics when we don't control our blood sugar levels. That is why it's very important to test yourself and work on controlling your blood sugar everyday to avoid our bodies getting affected by the high blood sugar and developing other complications.
