WHAT ARE WETLANDS
Wetlands are defined as land transitional between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem where the water table is usually at or near the surface or the land is covered by shallow water.

The word wetland is used to refer to all areas with water covered periodically, seasonally, or permanently, such as respectively, tidal flats, and flooded areas near rivers, rice paddies, swamps or lakes.

THE IMPORTANCE OF WETLAND
Wetland performs numerous valuable function such as:
recycle nutrients,
purify water,
attenuate floods,
recharge groundwater and also serves in-
providing drinking water,
fish,
fodder,
fuels,
wildlife habitat,
control rate of runoff in urban areas,
buffer shorelines against erosion and recreation to society.
