OCTOBER - BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

The month is about more than pink ribbons.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month can mean different things to different people. For some, it's a trigger - 31 days in the fall of pink ribbon reminders of a disease that forever changed them. For others, it's a chance to show their support for more than 2 million women around the world who are diagnosed with the disease each year.

Understanding the goals behind the global campaign and the emotions felt by the many different people living with the disease helps us appreciate the day.

Importance of Blood Group and Rhesus Status during Pregnancy.

As part of antenatal care, an expecting mother will be offered several blood tests and scans.

All the tests are done to make the pregnancy safer or check that the baby is healthy.

Blood group + Rhesus tests are to show whether one is blood group rhesus negative or rhesus positive. If they are rhesus negative they may need extra care to reduce the risk of rhesus disease.

Rhesus disease can happen if one is rhesus negative and pregnant and involves the mother's body developing antibodies that attack the baby's blood cells. This can lead to anaemia and jaundice in the baby.

If one is rhesus negative, they may be offered injections during pregnancy to prevent them from producing these antibodies. This is safe for both mother and baby.
