Blurry Distance Vision? Let's Talk About Myopia (Nearsightedness)!

Hello Harare! Dr. Mangombe here. Have you ever found yourself squinting to read road signs, identify faces across a room, or see the blackboard clearly? If distant objects appear blurry while things up close are perfectly clear, you might be experiencing Myopia, more commonly known as nearsightedness.

Myopia is a very common refractive error where the eye focuses light in front of the retina instead of directly on it. This makes distant objects appear out of focus. It often begins in childhood or adolescence and can progress as the eyes develop.

How do you know if you have Myopia? Common signs include:

-Difficulty seeing distant objects clearly
-Squinting to see more clearly
-Headaches or eye strain from trying to focus
-Difficulty driving, especially at night

The good news is that Myopia is easily diagnosed during a comprehensive eye exam and can be effectively managed! Spectacles, contact lenses, and in some cases, even refractive surgery are common ways to correct vision affected by myopia. For children, there are also various myopia management strategies available to help slow its progression.

Let's work together to bring your world into sharp focus!

👁️ Understanding Glaucoma with Dr. Mangombe 👁️

Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight” because it can slowly damage your vision without obvious symptoms at first. It happens when pressure inside the eye builds up and starts to harm the optic nerve — the part that sends images to your brain.

If untreated, glaucoma can lead to permanent vision loss. That’s why regular eye check-ups are so important, especially if you have a family history or other risk factors like diabetes or high blood pressure.

Early detection and treatment can protect your sight and help you live well with glaucoma.

If you experience blurry vision, eye pain, or see halos around lights, please visit an eye specialist immediately.

Take care of your eyes — they are your window to the world!
