Dehydration in Pregnant Women,

Dehydration can lead to lower levels of amniotic fluid, which can influence the baby's development, lead to preterm labor, and can affect the production of breast milk. Dehydration can cause deficiencies in nutrients that are vital for the health of the pregnant woman and the developing baby.

Experts say that pregnant women should drink 8 cups to 12 cups of fluids a day. This equals about 1.9 liters to 2.8liters. A person's water needs can be calculated based on how much food they need a day.

Welcome to BABY SAFETY MONTH

One of the primary goals of Baby Safety Month is to educate mothers and caregivers about potential hazards and safety precautions. Many accidents can be prevented with the right information, and this awareness month provides an opportunity to disseminate important safety tips and guidelines.

Mothets are bombarded with a multitude of baby products, from cribs to car seats and strollers. Baby Safety Month often highlights the importance of using certified and tested products to ensure the safety of infants and young children. It also promotes the proper installation and use of these items.

The home can be filled with hidden dangers for babies and toddlers. Baby Safety Month encourages parents to babyproof their homes, including securing furniture, covering electrical outlets, and using safety gates to prevent falls down stairs.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is a tragic event that can occur during a baby's sleep. Baby Safety Month provides an opportunity to educate parents about safe sleep practices, such as placing babies on their backs in a crib with a firm mattress and no loose bedding.

Babies are naturally curious and tend to put everything in their mouths. Baby Safety Month raises awareness about the dangers of household chemicals, medications, and small objects that can pose choking hazards.

Lets learn together through our ANC visits at New Cranborne Maternity Clinc every Tuesday and Thursday from 2pm and every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 37 Baines Medical Centre.

Happy Breastfeeding Week

24/04/2024

In our journey to motherhood Nausea and Vomiting (morning sickness). Research suggests that nausea and vomiting during pregnancy might be due to the effects of a hormone produced by the placenta called human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). Pregnant women begin producing HCG shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining.
Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy often develops by 5 to 6 weeks of gestation. Symptoms usually peak around 9 weeks and improve by 16 to 18. A small percentage of women have a prolonged course with symptoms extending until delivery. Morning sickness happens commonly in the morning
especially getting out of bed. Some even experience excessive salivation.

REMEDIES
Eat a small amount of carbohydrates almost every hour
Before bed you can eat foods such as nuts and cheese
Eat a few bananas or dry bread upon waking up in the morning.
Eat small frequent meals instead of two or three larger ones and also take small sips of liquid often
Drink a hot cup of mint , cinnamon or ginger tea at least two times a da before meals

One of the most common complaints during pregnancy is back pain. In fact, it's estimated that more than half of all women experience some degree of back discomfort. Most back pain is related to the physical changes that happen during pregnancy, including hormones, changes in the center of gravity, and posture.

The weight of the baby , the uterus and amniotic fluid changes posture and puts pressure on your bone muscles .
Too much standing or leaning forward or hard physical work can also cause back pain. Most of these back pains are normal during pregnancy.

Management Remedy
-Cold Compresses
-avoiding heavy work or carrying heavy loads
- frequent bed rest
- back massages

What to expect now that we have done your pregnant test, scans and your first antenatal visits. Exciting right😃

You can now expect the following to happen. These are caused by hormonal changes happening during pregnancy.
One of those is
1)CONSIPATION.

These are some of the signs :

Difficult to pass stools (p**p)
Hard, lumpy and small stools
Irregular or infrequent bowel movements
Light cramping
Lower belly pain
Passing gas (farting)
Uncomfortable, bloated, or sluggish feeling

If possible, it is best to try to relieve constipation by natural means before resorting to medication.
1) Eat more fruits and vegetables
2) Eat whole grains (brown rice, or whole wheat)
3) Drink at least 2l of clean water a day
4) Exercise regularly

More changes to be posted in the next posts. Stay tuned☺

Now that you have tested positive for pregnancy , here is your next step ANTENATAL VISITS

It’s best to have your first antenatal visit before 10 weeks into your pregnancy. Ideally this will happen when you are about 6 to 8 weeks pregnant. This is because there are lots of things to learn about. Also, some tests are recommended early in your pregnancy. The Doctor and Midwife may ask you the following questions

any prior pregnancies
any illnesses or operations you’ve had
what medicines you’re taking, including those from a pharmacy or supermarket
if you have any current health problems
if you are allergic to any medicines

Your doctor or midwife may also ask you if you
smoke
drink alcohol
take recreational drugs
are stressed
have any signs of depression or anxiety

These questions aren’t to judge you. The more your doctor or midwife knows about you, the better they can support you during your pregnancy.

They may also test the following
Blood pressure
Weight
Height

After all these , you may need to know how many weeks you have been pregnant and they will work out the due date of the baby.
If you are not sure when your last period date , they may book you a scan. This ultrasound scan will help figure out the week of pregnancy you are in.

Ultrasound Scan services are available at New Cranborne Maternity Clinic every Sartuday upon booking.
