🌍 World Stroke Day | 29 October

👩‍⚕️ Pregnancy, Birth Control & Stroke Risk 💫

Did you know that stroke isn’t just a concern for older adults?
Women — especially during pregnancy or while using hormonal birth control — face unique risks.

🔹 Pregnancy:
During pregnancy, changes in hormones, blood flow, and pressure can increase the likelihood of blood clots and high blood pressure — both key stroke risk factors.

🔹 Birth Control Pills:
Some contraceptives containing estrogen may slightly increase stroke risk — particularly in women who smoke, have migraines with aura, or suffer from high blood pressure.

💡 Protect Your Health:
✅ Always consult your doctor before choosing a birth control method.
✅ Keep track of your blood pressure during and after pregnancy.
✅ Prioritize a healthy lifestyle — eat well, stay active, and avoid smoking.

⚠️ Know the Early Signs of Stroke — Remember BE FAST:
B – Balance: Sudden loss of balance or dizziness.
E – Eyes: Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
F – Face: Sudden drooping on one side of the face — ask the person to smile.
A – Arm: Sudden weakness or numbness in one arm — ask them to raise both arms.
S – Speech: Sudden slurred or confused speech.
T – Time: Call for emergency help immediately if you notice any of these signs.

⏱ Early intervention can save your life.
If you suspect a stroke, get to the emergency room as fast as you can.

On this World Stroke Day, let’s raise awareness and empower women to make informed, safe health choices.
Your health today shapes your future. 💜

🩺 Fertility & Contraception: Myths vs. Facts

Hello everyone! I want to talk about fertility and contraception. There are many myths out there, and they can affect your reproductive health.

Myth 1: “You can’t get pregnant during your period.”
✅ Fact: Pregnancy is possible anytime, even during menstruation, though the chances may be lower.

Myth 2: “Birth control pills cause infertility.”
✅ Fact: Contraceptives do not cause permanent infertility. Fertility usually returns shortly after stopping them.

Myth 3: “Women over 35 can’t conceive naturally.”
✅ Fact: Fertility declines with age, but many women over 35 conceive naturally or with help.

Myth 4: “Fertility declines immediately after stopping contraception.”
✅ Fact: Fertility may take a few months to return, but most women can conceive within a year.

Myth 5: “Using contraception is unsafe for long-term health.”
✅ Fact: Modern contraceptives are safe for most women. Regular check-ups help monitor your health.

💡 Takeaway: Knowledge is power. Don’t let myths guide your reproductive choices. Speak to a qualified OBGYN who can give advice tailored to you.

Empower yourself with facts. Protect your fertility and reproductive health!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month 🎀

Too many women delay getting checked, but early detection saves lives. Please take time for yourself:

✅ Know the signs – look out for new lumps, changes in breast size, skin dimpling, pain, or unusual discharge.
✅ Get screened – regular mammograms and clinical breast exams are important.
✅ Do self-exams – once a month, a few days after your period, check your breasts in front of a mirror and by touch.

If you notice anything unusual, don’t ignore it. Go see your healthcare provider right away.

With care,
Dr. T. Chiwanga (OBGYN).

🌸 Minimally Invasive Surgery in Women’s Health 🌸

Many women feel anxious when they hear the word “surgery.” But today, medicine offers gentler approaches that put your comfort and recovery first.

Minimally Invasive (Keyhole) Surgery uses tiny incisions instead of large cuts. This means:

✅ Less pain after the operation

✅ Faster healing so you can return to your family, work, and daily life sooner

✅ Smaller scars, both physically and emotionally

For women facing conditions like, ectopic pregnancy, fibroids(specific selection criteria),
ovarian cysts, requiring tubal ligations or suffering from endometriosis, this approach can make a life-changing difference.

These procedures are carried out in a safe, supportive environment at the Borrowdale Trauma Centre Theatre, where advanced facilities meet compassionate care.

Every surgery is not just a medical journey, but also an emotional one. You are not alone.

*please consult with your doctor if you would like to consider this route of treatment

Let’s Talk About Fibroids – A Series 💜
Dear Ladies,
I am starting a special series on fibroids to help you better understand this common condition that affects so many women. Over the coming weeks, I will be sharing more in-depth information, practical advice, and ways to manage fibroids so that you can take charge of your health. 🌸
Many women silently live with fibroids, often believing that heavy periods, constant bloating, or pelvic pain are just a “normal” part of life. The truth is—they’re not, and you don’t have to suffer in silence.
Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in or around the womb. Some women may not notice them at all, while others may experience:
✨ Heavy or prolonged periods
✨ Pelvic or lower back pain
✨ Frequent trips to the bathroom
✨ Struggles with fertility
You are not alone. Fibroids are very common, especially in women between 30–50 years old, and the good news is that there are safe and effective ways to manage them.
🌷If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, don’t ignore them. Visit your healthcare provider and talk about it together.
Remember—your health and peace of mind matter. 💜
With care,
Dr. T. Chiwanga OBGYN
