The proverb kusina mai hakuendwe made sense. Johannesburg stripped me of everything except my will to survive.
There are seasons where the glamour fades quickly.

I remember walking all day, dropping CVs, pretending strength.
Blisters on my feet.
Dry throat.
Hope feeling heavier than my body.
And then, under a tree near Small Street,
a voice found me.
“Sisi, are you okay?”
Sometimes survival is not loud.
Sometimes it looks like a bun and a Fanta handed to you by a stranger who sounds like home.
That day I learned something.
Even in your lowest moment, God will send someone who recognises your accent, your spirit, your struggle.
