WORLD SPINE DAY 2025: Invest in your spine

October 16th is World Spine day, a day set aside to raise awareness of the growing burden of spine pain and disability.

Key Facts:
🧭 In 2020, low back pain (LBP) affected 619 million people globally and it is estimated that the number of cases will increase to 843 million cases by 2050, driven largely by population expansion and ageing.
‼️ LBP is the single leading cause of disability worldwide and the condition for which the greatest number of people may benefit from rehabilitation.
‼️ LBP can be experienced at any age, and most people experience LBP at least once in their life.
‼️ Prevalence increases with age up to 80 years, while the highest number of LBP cases occurs at the age of 50–55 years. LBP is more prevalent in women (2).

Non-specific LBP is the most common presentation of LBP (about 90% of cases).

World Spine Day 2025 calls on individuals to invest in their spine by adopting healthy habits such as:
1. Maintaining a good weight
2. Maintaining good posture
3. Engaging in regular physical activity
4. Creating ergonomically friendly environments
- good office workstations
- good lifting techniques
5. Smoking avoidance and cessation
6. Avoiding sitting for too long- stretch every hour
7. Sleeping right- invest in good beds (firm mattresses) and good pillows(e.g memory foam pillows) and get good hours of sleep (7-8hrs).
6. Use safe lifting techniques
7. Staying hydrated
8. Managing stress
9. Investing in good nutrition- e.g reducing or eliminating inflammatory foods
10. Wearing appropriate footwear

🏨 Healthcare professionals, policymakers, and businesses are urged to incorporate spinal health into their policies and wellness initiatives.

WORLD ARTHRITIS DAY 2025:

October 12th is World Arthritis day, a day aimed at raising awareness about rheumatic and musculoskeletal (RMDs). This day highlights the strength, resilience and shared experiences of the arthritis community.

RMDs are among the most prevalent, disabling, burdensome, and costly non-communicable diseases in the world. There are over 200 types of RMDs but the most common are Gout, Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Psoriatic arthritis, spondylarthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis lupus, and SjΓΆgren's. RMDs can also trigger comorbidities such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.

World Arthritis Day 2025 is focused on the power of dreams β€” the personal goals, hopes, and visions that inspire people living with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) to move forward.

In a world where living with a chronic condition often means navigating daily challenges, having a dream can be a source of strength and motivation. Whether it’s the dream of better treatments, greater awareness, or simply the ability to live life more freely, these visions deserve to be heard and supported.

On this day, we would like to encourage people living with RMDs to live their dreams. No matter the challenges you face everyday, each day represents a new hope for bigger and better things and it is waiting to be harnessed.
To the community at large, let's be there for our loved ones, find out what their hopes and dream are and set out to help them achieve that!

WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY 2025: Mental health in humanitarian emergencies

Mental health is 'a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realise their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community'. WHO

During humanitarian emergencies such as natural disasters, pandemics and conflict, peoples mental wellbeing is at stake and there's a greater chance of suffering from a mental health problem. They find it difficult to cope and participate less in the day to day running of the community.

People in different situations such as PostCovid, physical wars, civil unrests, economic turmoil, natural disasters (floods, fires, earthquakes) may be in distress and therefore need our support and guidance.

πŸ’‘WAYS WE CAN HELP THOSE WITH MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS πŸ’‘

πŸ”” Tell them you're worried
This might be a good way to open up a conversation. It also shows you care about that person and have time for them – and that they do not have to avoid you.

πŸ”” Carry on as usual
Do what you usually do – behaving differently can make someone feel more isolated. Do not be afraid to offer kind words and a space to talk, whether by phone, messaging or in person.

πŸ”” Reassure them
The first time someone mentions their worries is a big step. It's good to recognise this and reassure them. Let them know you're there to listen when they need to talk.

πŸ”” Offer your time to listen
Listening is an important skill. Ask open questions that start with "how", "what", "where" or "when". This can help people open up. Get Listening tips from the Samaritans

πŸ”” Do not force it
Do not force someone to talk to you or get help, or go to a GP on their behalf, as it might make them feel uncomfortable. Gently explore their reasons and listen without judgement, as this might help them to work out what to do.

πŸ”” Look after yourself
It can be upsetting to hear someone you care about in distress. Be kind to yourself and take some time to relax or do something you enjoy. Check out our mental wellbeing tips.

πŸ”” Offer practical help
Little acts of kindness – like offering to do the shopping or to go to professional appointments with them – can help. Find out what they need help with.
