• Proper use of medications (e.g. drugs to lower blood pressure)

• Avoiding conditions or exposures that can harm the kidneys or cause a sudden drop in kidney function (called acute kidney injury), such as:
➢ Kidney infections
➢ Medications (Over the counter pain medicines like ibuprofen and naproxen and certain antibiotics)

Complications
It is an unanticipated problem that arises following, and is a result of, a procedure, treatment, or illness.
Complications of kidney disease may include:

• A sudden rise in potassium levels in your blood (hyperkalemia), which could impair your heart's ability to function and may be life-threatening
• Anemia
• Damage to your central nervous system, which can cause difficulty concentrating, personality changes or seizures
• Decreased immune response, which makes you more vulnerable to infection
• Decreased s*x drive, erectile dysfunction or reduced fertility
• Fluid retention, which could lead to swelling in your arms and legs, high blood pressure, or fluid in your lungs (pulmonary edema)
• Heart and blood vessel (cardiovascular) disease
• Irreversible damage to your kidneys (end-stage kidney disease), eventually requiring either dialysis or a kidney transplant for survival
• Pericarditis, an inflammation of the sac-like membrane that envelops your heart (pericardium)
• Pregnancy complications that carry risks for the mother and the developing fetus
• Weak bones and an increased risk of bone fractures

Causes or risk factors of chronic kidney disease
Risk factor and defination

Diabetes mellitus
It is a disorder of carbohydrate metabolism characterized by impaired ability of the body to produce or respond to insulin and thereby maintain proper levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood.

Hypertension
It is a condition in which the blood vessels have persistently raised pressure.

Glomerulonephritis
It is an inflammation of the kidney's filtering units (glomeruli)

Interstitial nephritis
It is an inflammation of the kidney's tubules and surrounding structures

Polycystic kidney disease
It is a genetic disorder that is characterized by the development of innumerable fluid filled cysts in the kidneys. The cysts replace much of the mass of the kidneys which reduces kidney function, leading to kidney failure

Kidney stones
Hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside your kidneys

Vesicoureteral reflux
The backing up of urine into the kidneys
