Island Hospice & Healthcare Palliative care, bereavement counseling and training

For 43 years, Island Hospice and Healthcare (formerly Island Hospice Service Zimbabwe) has been improving the lives of those facing chronic or terminal illnesses. Island Hospice Service Zimbabwe was established in 1979 as the first Hospice in Africa and is a well-known centre of excellence in palliative care. The initial objectives were to provide direct home-based palliative care to those with a

life threatening illness and their families and a comprehensive bereavement service. In 2014, Island Hospice Service Zimbabwe, changed its name to Island Hospice and Healthcare to better communicate the expansion of its services within its holistic approach to palliative care developed over the last three decades. The organization has managed to build a network of partners and services that reach vulnerable groups in society which include displaced peoples, orphans and other vulnerable children, young care-givers, widows and widowers, senior citizens and marginalized communities. Our services have expanded to include not only direct palliative care and bereavement counselling but also community health care initiatives, capacity building and training for healthcare professionals.

Understanding Traumatic Bereavement

Bereavement is our natural response to losing someone important. Trauma occurs when we experience deeply distressing events that overwhelm our ability to cope.
When loss happens suddenly or unexpectedly, grief becomes complicated by trauma, bringing intense shock, overwhelming emotions, intrusive thoughts, and physical symptoms like difficulty sleeping or concentrating.

Trauma and bereavement counselling provides a safe space to process emotions, make sense of experiences, and learn healthy coping strategies. Seeking support is not weakness it's courage toward healing.

Remember: You don't have to face this alone. Professional support can guide you through the darkest times.

💙 Our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and communities affected by yesterday's tragic accident along Seke Road. Our thoughts are with all those who lost loved ones in this devastating event.

Grief is individual. No two journeys are alike and that’s what makes your story so important.

At Island Hospice, we understand that grief doesn’t follow a schedule or look the same for everyone. Whether you're quietly remembering, struggling to cope or just trying to make it through the day your grief is valid.

✨ Healing isn’t about forgetting it’s about honoring love and finding strength, in your own time, in your own way.

You don’t have to do it alone.
Our team is here to support you, wherever you are on your journey.

💙 A Gentle Reminder About Grief 💙
Grief is a wound that needs attention in order to heal. It takes incredible courage to face our feelings openly and honestly, to express them fully, and to accept them for however long the healing process takes.
For most of us, this is no small task. Grief asks us to sit with uncomfortable emotions, to honor our pain, and to trust that healing will come in its own time.
✨ Remember: We don't grieve to forget or cancel out the past. We grieve to carry forward the strength, meaning, and beauty from what we've lost into the new pattern that's emerging in our lives.
Your grief is valid. Your timeline is valid. Your healing matters.
If you're walking through grief today, be gentle with yourself. You're braver than you know. 🤗

🩺 Understanding Pain Management 🩺
Pain is deeply personal and subjective - it's what the patient says it is. Whether physical, emotional, social, or spiritual, pain significantly impacts quality of life.
✨ Effective pain management combines multiple approaches:

Medications (analgesics, opioids when needed)
Physiotherapy and movement therapy
Alternative treatments like acupuncture, massage, and yoga
Personalized care based on pain type and severity (1-10 scale)

🎯 The goal? Reduce pain intensity, enhance daily functioning, and minimize side effects so patients can maintain independence and improve their overall well-being.
Remember: comprehensive pain care isn't just about medication - it's about restoring quality of life through holistic, patient-centered approaches.
