Refractive Errors are vision problems that happen when the eye cannot properly focus light on the retina, causing blurred vision. They are the most common cause of visual impairment worldwide, but they can be easily corrected with eyeglasses, contact lenses, or surgery. The main types include: myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism, and presbyopi
The Four Main Types of Refractive Errors
πMyopia (Nearsightedness)
*Description: Distant objects appear blurry, while close objects are clear.
*Cause: The eyeball is too long or the cornea is too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina.
πHyperopia (Farsightedness)
*Description: Close objects are blurry, while distant objects are clear.
*Cause: The eyeball is too short or the cornea is too flat, causing light to focus behind the retina.
πAstigmatism
*Description: Vision is distorted or blurry at all distances.
*Cause: The cornea or lens has an irregular shape, causing light to focus unevenly on the retina.
πPresbyopia
*Description: Difficulty focusing on close objects (common in people over 40).
*Cause: The lens loses flexibility with age, reducing the eyeβs ability to focus up close.
π Symptoms
*Blurry vision (near or far)
*Eye strain or headaches
*Squinting
*Difficulty reading or driving at night
π©Ί Treatment Options
*Eyeglasses β most common and simplest correction
*Contact lenses β provide clearer, wider vision for some people
*Refractive surgery β permanently reshapes the cornea
*Orthokeratology β uses special lenses worn overnight to temporarily correct vision
