So after weeks of turmoil .we finally got the young man back in Rehab . It was a lot of family and friends intervention. We can only Hope and pray that he keeps on fighting. They say Hope is the last to die in human beings.
He has a long hard journey ahead but it’s one day at a time, and sometimes it’s an hour at a time . As long as there is no giving up it’s a win ..

The 12 STEPS

Step 1.
"We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.”

The first step to overcoming a problem is for a person to recognize the problem itself.
That is what an alcoholic or addict is forced to admit when they accept this first rule in the 12-step program. It is a crucial starting place because it positions them to wholeheartedly attack their substance use disorder rather than attempting treatment while lost in denial, which will cause them to fail the recovery attempt.

Other key points in this first rule come with the words “powerless” and “unmanageable.” These are intended to stress the nature of addiction itself, since when dependent on a substance, the user loses control over their usage and in turn loses control of their life. The AA version of this includes mention to alcohol specifically, but that part of the line can be modified to apply to any type of addiction.

The Twelve Steps
This week I’m focusing on the 12 step program and making a post for every step .
Understanding the philosophy of 12 Step program …

Many modern addiction treatment centers follow a strategy known as the 12-step program for their patients, which is intended to provide them with an outlined path for guidance and support. The 12-step program has been a popular set of guidelines for helping an individual with their addiction for almost a full century, yet many people do not truly understand what has made it so impactful. Particularly to the modern reader, it may seem like an outdated philosophy given that it is filled with religious reference, but the fundamentals at its core are valuable regardless of an addict’s background and belief system.

Serenity Prayer

Reinhold Niebuhr wrote the original version of the serenity prayer that reads: "O God and Heavenly Father, grant to us the serenity of mind to accept that which cannot be changed, courage to change that which can be changed, and wisdom to know the one from the other .”

Im sharing this from the perspection of not the addict but of someone who has a loved one in active addiction.
It is very important to know that the battle is never ours to fight. It doesn’t matter what we do or how much we love them . At the end of the day the battle is in their hands . Unfortunately.. You can’t love them out of addiction. Most of the times we hold on to the person we knew before the addiction hit . The sad thing is we can never get that same person back .

It is very very important to know and accept that the battle is not yours .

One of the first things you can do, is to stop dealing or meddling with their addiction.

As long as you are trying to deal/converse/nag/complain about their drinking/using of drugs , in their mind ,heart and soul you are the problem. For the alcoholic, the alcohol is the solutionand not the problem , and you are just standing in the way. No good can come of complaining/controlling about the alcoholic's drinking.

By all means be concerned about their behaviour. Their actions and words can be your concern. If you can move the conversation into the realm of their own performance as human beings, as a friend, Partner, or parent , then there is an opportunity for your loved one to see for themselves that they are not living up to their own roles, standards or promises. The very best way for them to discover the impact, is when they themselves have made a promise to themselves, family or friends , and failed to fulfil it due to their drinking and or substance abuse .

Now the most crucial part ——
The next thing you need to do, is to live your own life. Put the focus on yourself. Do not curtail your life because of your loved one . Do the things you would do normally. Enjoy them. Do whatever you can to live a powerful and constructive life for yourself, and the people around you.

The reason why I started this page is because taita dambudziko re addiction in zimbabwe. Our kids , brothers , sisters, fathers and uncles vari kuparara nema drugs ne doro. The sad thing is our government is doing nothing to help us or our loved ones . Not everyone can afford to pay for rehabilitation. It’s a luxury that not everyone can afford. So sadly no one is coming to save or help us .
And that’s the reason that I created this page so that we can be together, help each other , share books and knowledge on how we can co exist together with our loved ones who are in active addiction without us losing ourselves.
This is a safe place for me , for you and anyone else who wants to take part .

Codependency and Addiction, Loving an Active Addict.
Hey MaZimba ,, so today I want to talk about CODEPENDENCE and how it comes to play in our lives as we co exist with our loved ones who have addiction problems.

What is Codependence??

The American Society for Addiction Medicine describes codependence as a family member's harmful over-involvement with the addiction process.

Though the term has grown to increasingly widespread use over the years, the concept of codependence has not been universally endorsed. Some have argued that it pathologizes otherwise normal, caring responses—such as empathy and self-sacrifice.Originally, the concept of codependency took shape amongst treatment professionals referring to the behavioral patterns of the spouses of alcohol/drug abusers, though the term was eventually expanded to describe a dysfunctional family dynamic seen in people with other types of addictions, as well as any other behavioral or mental health problem.

This here plays a really big in setting our free from the hooks 🪝 of addiction.
Yes you are not an addict but if someone you love is addicted, addiction is and will be a part of you
