Human Metapneumovirus HMPV
Q1) What is HMPV?
Is a common respiratory virus, that primarily affects young children (unerder the age of 5years), individuals with compromised immunity & older adults. It is not a new virus; it was identified first in 2001 & has gained attention due to a spike of HMPV infections. The symptoms are similar to common cold often causes upper respiratory infections. Complications of HMPV may include bronchiolitis, bronchitis, Pneumonia, Asthma or COPD flare-ups and otitis media
Q2) Is there a vaccine for HMPV?
As for now there is no vaccine available, but research and development are underway.
Q3) How can we prevent HMPV without a vaccine?
We can prevent the spread of HMPV by these simple ways.
a) Hand hygiene (remember the 5 moments of hand hygiene)
b) Prevent the virus from entering your body by avoiding touching your face, lips, mouth and nose.
c) Wearing a mask in crowded/ poorly ventilated areas or in public.
d) Cough Etiquette - cover your mouth and nose with tissue or your elbow when coughing, disposing tissue immediately.
e) Avoid public spaces if you or your child is sick.
Q4) Do we have HMPV in Zimbabwe??
No currently we don't have any reported cases.
