MARCH 2013 RECOLLECTIONS 1
This time 13 years ago my husband and I were in India for the first time, waiting for him to recover after his triple heart bypass. It had been a whirlwind trip and shocking in many ways. We had NO idea what we were letting ourselves in for and what to expect in the hospital or in India. Fortunately, I went with a very open mind and met some lovely people who made our stay most enjoyable. The best advice I was given before we went was “India is different” and it certainly is. You cannot anticipate what it is like and one needs to be prepared. It is certainly not a good idea to go it alone and that is where India4Medical comes in as we help and care for you every step of the way. Our experience and on the ground services in Zimbabwe and India are invaluable.

Back to March 2013, on our first day at the hospital we met the founding chairman and head of the cardiac unit at the hospital, Dr. Naresh Trehan. He is an amazing man who initially trained in India and then went to the USA where he completed his training in cardiac surgery and held important academic and clinical positions in New York and won numerous awards. Despite a successful career in the USA, he wanted to return to his homeland to start a pioneering state-of-the-art heart institute. In 2007 he opened his dream hospital in Gurgaon and that is where we were lucky enough to go to. Dr Trehan has performed over 48,000 open heart surgeries including some of these operations for the first time in India. In 2025 his hospital had been voted “Best Hospital in the World” for the 6th year in a row. What an achievement!

A FIRST-CLASS FAREWELL TO CC
It is with great sadness that I tell you about the passing of Carl Albert Carlsson, known at Medanta as Carl Albert and CC by some of his golfing friends. Carl had a bad fall a few weeks ago and ended up in hospital and sadly died on 28th February. Carl was married to Lorraine, and they have 2 children Lee and Ryan and 2 adored grandchildren. Here are some pics of Lee with her dad in India where she came to help him.
Carl was a gentle, sincere man with a great sense of humour, and was a highly regarded engineer. When I got to India to look after Carl, he couldn’t talk (as he had had a trachy fitted), yet he didn’t complain about his condition or what he was going through. His only whinge was about punctuality which is not a priority in India.
I bought him a sunny stress ball to keep him smiling and together we tried to find humour wherever we could, like the funny shoe covers we had to put on in the hospital, and sitting in First Class on Emirates while waiting for the chairlift to arrive.
I learnt a lot from you Carl my patient. Fly high you will be sorely missed.

I always advocate that people should accept and embrace the Indian ways and throw in a lot of patience to have a truly amazing experience there. To quote from The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (my most favourite movie) “Everything will be alright in the end and if it’s not alright then it is not the end!”
During my last trip to India, I found the hospital staff amazing and so helpful, and I made several good friends along the way. We had nurses who came to stay overnight when required, and a wonderful doctor who would pop by the apartment to help when I needed him. Even the Transport Team with their wheelchairs became reliable friends. Also, the lab techs who came twice a week to take blood, the Amazon delivery guys, the little old laundry man who collected our dirty clothes every morning and his cute grandson who returned in the evening with immaculately ironed ones. The lovely Ethiopian man on the balcony across the way always ready with a smile and a chat and an offer of delicious coffee. Monica the lady with the clothes shop, where I had to go often as Carl and I lost so much weight our clothes were falling off! My favourite chemist Umesh whom I had to visit every day, and I even met his perfect (his words!) wife. The local street chai man, the veggie seller who wanted to talk about Zim cricket, my regular tuk tuk driver who took me grocery shopping and waited to take me back to the apartment at no extra charge, and so on.
Although India is very foreign and different to Zimbabwe, I always feel I am surrounded by friends there.

I have been silent for too long now. I am not very good at this SM thing. I had employed an enthusiastic young man to help me but sadly I had to let him go, so now it is only me.
In August and September of 2025, I was in India again to help a patient who was at Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon for treatment. It was not the usual time of year that I go, and it was very hot and wet. If you are able avoid the months of June. July and August in Delhi then do.
My patient, Carl, had been there for a while having chemo and radiation for throat cancer and he was struggling with his condition and also with accepting the Indian ways. My mission was to get him well and strong enough to travel back home and on 2nd October we touched down in Harare much to Carl’s delight and my relief. It had been a long hard journey for him and his family, but he did tell me that he would have died if he hadn’t gone to India. His tumour has shrunk noticeably, and he is putting on weight again, so I do feel it was worth the hardships and hassles we went through.
