HOW TO ORGANIZE YOUR REFRIGERATOR

Yesterday, we discussed a topic about food management. Today we are going to discuss on organizing your refrigerator.

Cleaning the fridge is no small feat, which is probably why most people only do it once or two times a year. And once you do clean it, it's important to know how to organize the refrigerator properly, so you can find your items when you need them.

With the help of the following refrigerator organization ideas, you'll never again have to hunt for the mayonnaise or wonder where you put the leftover pasta.

KNOW WHAT’S IN YOUR FRIDGE

The remains of last night’s dinner and other rogue foods can sometimes be forgotten and pushed towards the back of the fridge. That’s why almost everyone has a jar in the refrigerator with one lone olive or a package containing a dried-up piece of cheese. Kick this bad habit to the curb by keeping a running list of what perishables you need to eat sooner than later on a magnetized dry erase board that’s secured to the refrigerator door. This will give you a better idea of what leftovers you need to take to lunch, as well as the meals you can cook with items you already have.

PURGE REGULARLY

One of the key factors in figuring out how to organize a refrigerator is learning to get rid of things you don’t need. Make sure you’re keeping your fridge tidy by tossing foods that you’re not going to eat (like the leftovers from last week) or items that have expired (the yogurt that you’re scared to open because it may have spawned a new life form). You might find it convenient to take care of this task once a week, such as the night before trash pickup day. Regular clean-outs are not only good for organization, they also help your fridge work better, as the air needs room to circulate in order to properly cool your food.

LEARN TO LOVE BINS

Some refrigerators don’t have built-in storage bins. Even if yours does, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t add a few more to help keep things orderly. You can store many things in these containers, including:
- Soft drinks, bottled iced coffees and juice boxes
- Deli meats, cheeses or cured meats
- Snack foods, Individual-sized yogurts or Salad dressings
Or you can group items by meals your family eats a lot, so you can remove the entire bin.

There are several cardinal rules of refrigeration that will help you determine which items should be stored in each part of your refrigerator.

1. DOORS

The doors are the warmest part of the fridge and also experience the most fluctuation in temperature. Reserve this area for condiments, salad dressings, pickles, butter, soft cheeses and pasteurized orange juice. (Fresh-squeezed orange juice should be placed on the bottom shelf.)

2. TOP SHELF

This is another warm area in the fridge. It’s the place where you should store jams and jellies, hummus, leftovers and bottled or canned beverages.

3. MIDDLE SHELF

As this part of the fridge is cooler than the top shelf, it can be a good place to store eggs or yogurt, though you should keep them in their original packaging and set them back in the fridge as far as possible. You can also store any other items similar to those stored on the upper shelf or in the door.

4. LOWER SHELVES

This is where items most prone to spoiling will go, including uncooked meats, fish and poultry, milk and unpasteurized orange juice. Be certain to store uncooked meat, fish and poultry in their original packaging and on a drip tray so that any items in the crisper below don’t get contaminated.

5. DELI BIN

As the name suggests, this is where you’ll store deli items, such as lunch meats, cheeses, hot dogs, bacon or other cured meats. If your fridge doesn’t have a deli bin, these items will need to be kept on the bottom shelf of the fridge.

6. CRISPERS

Naturally, this is where you’ll keep your fruits and veggies. If you have two drawers, keep apples, grapes, avocados, peppers and other produce that emit a lot of ethylene gas away from those that don’t (think leafy greens, carrots, broccoli, basil, green onions and so forth). Ethylene gas can cause your produce to ripen and go bad more quickly.

Once your fridge is cleaned, it only takes a few minutes a day to keep it organized. However, it takes a lot more time to maintain a daily cleaning schedule. If you need help keeping up with the housework, contact us today. That way you can spend more time doing the things you really love and still enjoy a tidy home.

HOW TO REDUCE FOOD WASTE FOR HOME COOKS?

Whether you’ve always been the family cook, chef or are just learning to perfect your meal planning and cooking now while stuck at home, making your food go as far as possible can be a source of solace during this difficult time.

With the stay-at-home measures in response to COVID-19—and with many of us tightening our budgets—there has been a renewed focus on creative, cost-effective home cooking. Right now, millions of people are out of work. Many of these people are shopping with restricted budgets or facing food insecurity for the first time and are trying to find ways to make their food go further. For some, cooking can be a way to reduce stress, find peace, and connect more closely with family and friends through shared recipes.

Here is how to reduce food waste at home with the help of a little planning and organization.

1. CONDUCT A REGULAR INVENTORY

Before you make your meal plan or shopping list for the upcoming week, go through your refrigerator to see what needs to be used before it spoils. You can attach a magnetized dry erase board on the fridge door and keep a running list of these items to make sure everyone in the house is aware of the foods that need to be eaten first. Cross the items off once they’ve been used up. Another benefit of keeping a list is that doing so can help you identify whether you’re purchasing too much of a certain food, like avocados or yogurt, so that you can scale back on future shopping trips.

2. PLAN A WEEKLY MENU

After you’ve completed your inventory of the fridge, make a weekly meal plan using as many of those must-go ingredients as possible. It’s a good idea to only plan two or three dinners in advance, as busy weeks can often lead to unplanned wasteful meals.

3. KEEP YOUR FRIDGE ORDERLY

Believe it or not, there is a right way to store food in your refrigerator. Make sure you know which foods go where, as this can help keep them fresh much longer. When possible, keep items that you need to eat sooner than later towards the front of the fridge or even at eye level so that you don’t lose track of them. Additionally, label leftovers with both the contents and date the food was prepared. And if you don’t think you’ll get to leftovers before they go bad, freeze them and work these items into your next week’s meal planning.

4. TRY OUT FOOD PRESERVATION METHODS

Properly canning or pickling foods can help to extend their shelf life and avoid spoilage. If a person accidentally buys too much of a particular food, preserving the food in this way can prevent it from spoiling and being thrown away.
Examples include turning apples into applesauce or cucumbers into pickles.

It’s well worth it to take the time to learn how to reduce food waste at home through organization…literally. After all, when food items expire, you don’t get your money back just because you didn’t use them. And organic foods are especially expensive, so if that’s your preference, you might as well be lighting piles of money on fire if you don’t take the time to store food properly. Once you figure out how to organize food in your kitchen — and get into a solid rhythm — you may very well start to see the amount of food you throw away go down, while your bank account balance goes up.

HOW TO SOLVE MISUNDERSTANDINGS BETWEEN THE EMPLOYER AND THE MAID?Misunderstandings in whichever workplace is unavoidable...

HOW TO SOLVE MISUNDERSTANDINGS BETWEEN THE EMPLOYER AND THE MAID?

Misunderstandings in whichever workplace is unavoidable. In the case of domestic helpers, unsettled arguments between the employer and the maid often results to the maid’s termination. The issue on who must adjust during these kinds of disputes are often debatable. Does the employer need to be more patient because she’s the ‘leader’ of the house? Or does the maid must humbly acknowledge to whatever the employer insist because of her position? The best way to resolve an issue is a two-way adjustment. Both parties must do something to settle a misunderstanding.

1. DO NOT LET COMPLAINTS PILE UP

Unspoken complaints and anger result to long-time grudges. If the maid’s slow performance displeases the employer, she must bring it up to the maid the moment she realizes it. The tendency of the unspoken complaints is that it builds up inside you and negatively changes your attitude towards the other party without her knowing what’s wrong.

2. COME UP WITH A SOLUTION WITHOUT OFFENDING.

Every discussion of the problem must come up with a solution. If both of you are arguing in circles, it means you don’t have a problem-solving approach in your mind. Questions that sounds like ‘So, what should be the remedy to improve this?’ must be asked during the talk instead of ‘Why are you so stupid?’ We can actually have a good conclusion without offending each other. Both should not have the intention to insult or hurt verbally. Our heart’s intention during the discussion is a big factor to solve a dispute easily.

3. BE HONEST AND GIVE UNBIASED JUDGEMENTS.

Our judgements could be tainted by emotions such as anger. If you’re uncontrollable and berserk, let yourself calm down first for a minute before discussing the issue. Choose the words you’re going to impart carefully without disregarding honesty. Clarify things respectfully when you’re confused of what has been said.
Lastly, make it clear that the problems discussed inside the household must remain in the household unless, a mediator from outside is needed. Spreading malicious rumors about each other will not do any good to improve the relationship.

4. EFFORTS TO SOLVE A PROBLEM MUST COME FROM BOTH PARTIES.

Although, one may be superior to the other, both are responsible to maintain a healthy employer-employee relationship. Keep in mind that there’s no such thing as perfect employment. A boss has her or his individual unique trait that affects the employment itself. This is also true for the maids.

WAYS TO BE NICE TO YOUR MAID

If you have a maid, it is important to look at her as someone who supports you in your daily chores that you don’t want to or are unable to do. Just because you consider the job she does to be menial does not mean that she does not deserve your respect and consideration. Here are some ways to be nice to your maid.

1. TREAT HER WITH RESPECT

This is the most important of all ways to be nice to your maid. Your maid is also a human being and deserves all the respect, civility and consideration that you have for others of your own standard. Just because she is poorer than you does not mean that she can be disrespected.

2. TRUST YOUR MAID’S ABILITY

It is important that you are willing to trust your maid to do her job well. First display your trust and then bring up issues if you have any. Do not start by showing distrust for your maid’s ability.

3. TRUST YOUR MAID’S HONOR

Just because someone is poor does not mean that they will cheat or steal. While it is important to be on your guard, it is also important to display trust. If you have reasons to distrust your new maid, do not keep her. But, if you have no reasons to believe that she is dishonest, be willing to trust her.

4. MANAGE YOUR TONE

This is one of the important ways to be nice to your maid. Be friendly in your tone when you speak to her. There is no reason to be unnecessarily commanding, mean or rude. Even if you are not completely satisfied, there are ways of resolving the issue without being demeaning to her.

5. BE CONSIDERATE TOWARDS HER

Your maid is also a human being. Be considerate in what you ask her to do and the amount of work you give her. Just because you are paying her a salary does not make her your slave. Ensure that what you ask her to do is within her means to accomplish.

6. BE COMPASSIONATE TOWARDS HER

Like all human beings, you maid will also face overwhelming situations in life like serious illnesses in the family, deaths, etc. On the other hand, there will also be joyous occasions like weddings, births, anniversaries, etc. Ensure that she is given time and freedom to fully participate in her life when she is employed under you.

7. SHOW HER YOUR APPRECIATION

This is perhaps the best of all ways to be nice to your maid. Let your maid know that you appreciate everything that she does for you. You can do this by giving her a gift or a bonus on her birthday, her wedding day or when you need more help from her than usual.

Your maid can be a big support for you in your life. Use these ways to be nice to your maid and treat her with respect, trust and appreciation. You will be surprised at how much difference it makes to her.

Continuation from Part 1......

4. Encourage your domestic helper to share a recipe

You can get your domestic helper to share recipe ideas with her friends who are successful chefs whose recipes work for them and the families they work for. She can get great recipes from her friends and then try them at home. This is an exciting way to taste new dishes all the while knowing they are tried and proven by others.

5. Communication is essential when teaching your helper to cook.

Make sure your domestic worker knows what kind of food you like to eat; the more details, the better. For example, maybe you like peppery, or perhaps you like deep frying, or you're a vegetarian, gluten-free, paleo, vegan, dairy-free, or eat everything, but you don't like certain meats. Either way, if you communicate with your helper the type of food you prefer and eat, she can help you plan menus and come up with different ideas from time to time with some fantastic dishes to taste.

6. Encourage her to make the internet her friend.

There are a plethora of food and recipe blogs, videos, and websites. Pinterest, for instance, is great for recipe ideas. In addition, YouTube has numerous cooking channels on its platform. So, for example, if you want to eat a meal that contains pumpkin at home, you can teach your domestic helper how to source the perfect recipes on Pinterest or cooking videos on Youtube for inspiration. You can show your helper how to search for recipes on the internet based on the things you would like to eat, for example: 'simple vegetarian dinner ideas’ or fun and healthy kids lunchbox recipes. This can also be exciting for your helper as it gives them a chance to do some research and find things that they like cooking.

7. Register your domestic worker for a cooking class

Home cooking classes are probably one of the best ways to hone your cooking skills with your help. Many chefs teach this type of class to help them prepare wonderful meals for your family. This could also be a fun way for your helper to learn more and hone their cooking skills. Cooking classes, shows and video courses help people pay attention all the while bringing a sense of fun and relaxation into the mix. You can even take a cooking class together and both learn to cook a fun dish.

Tips for teaching your domestic worker to cook .. PART 1

You may find that your helper is in need of some guidance when it comes to preparing meals and keeping an organized kitchen. Not to worry! CvMaids to the rescue. We want to share some tips on how to teach your domestic worker to cook.

By planning menus, choosing recipes, purchasing ingredients, and preparing meals, domestic workers can significantly improve the health and comfort of the employers they work for. However, cooking skill levels among domestic workers vary, as do employers' culinary preferences.

Some domestic workers already have a lot of experience and skills in food preparation. Their reputation as a cook capable of preparing delicious meals may be the main reason why they were hired. However, even if you have experience with one or more types of cooking, some helpers may not be familiar with certain types of cooking that their employers might be interested in.

Other helpers, including those who are relatively young and less experienced, may have basic food skills.
Some employers may even prioritize other duties over cooking (for example, taking care of babies) so that any food-related activity, such as shopping or preparing food, might be more of a "bonus."

Team member experience and employer priorities are just two of the many things you need to consider when taking on the role of "home kitchen manager" with your domestic helper.

So, when it comes to teaching your domestic worker how to cook, it could get a bit stressful and confusing. Here are some valuable resources to walk you through the basics.

1. Read the recipe. Repeat. Understand the recipe. Repeat!

Encourage your domestic helper to read the recipe carefully, sometimes again and again if necessary. For most helper English is not their first language and your recipe might be somewhat difficult to understand at first, but with careful instruction and patience you can ensure that she understands the need to read and understand the instructions, have the required equipment, and know where to find the ingredients. On the other hand, make sure you don't ask your new domestic helper to cook something overly complicated with a long recipe and too much text on the page; this is key to teaching your domestic helper how to cook.

2. Practice makes perfect for improving cooking skills.

The first time your domestic worker cooks a dish, it might not look and taste exactly as you thought it would, but it probably will be after they've done it a few times. Therefore, it is a good idea for you and your helper to briefly discuss what she did right or what went wrong after every meal to see how she can improve on it; also, you should be able to tell her what you think she did wrong and inspire her to do better the next time. Make sure to encourage your helpers efforts in this area and help her understand that learning about the things you like to eat is a work in progress but that you have full trust that she can get it done.

3. Always try it first

Yes, there are varying cooking styles. Sometimes, the particular Mediterranean or Western-style dish you want to be prepared may have an unfamiliar flavour when your helper prepares it; that's why it is advisable to cook it first and have your helper learn from you, this way the next time she prepares a dish you want, she knows how to do it correctly.
