💡Understanding Arthritis:

As we navigate the complexities of our professional lives, it's essential to prioritize our health and well-being. One condition that affects millions worldwide is arthritis, a term that encompasses over 100 different types of joint-related disorders.

*🦴What is Arthritis?*

Arthritis is a chronic condition that affects the joints, causing inflammation, pain, stiffness, and limited mobility. It's a leading cause of disability worldwide, impacting people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds.

*🧮Characteristics of Arthritis:*

1️⃣. *Joint Pain*: Arthritis often causes persistent pain in the affected joints, which can worsen with activity or inactivity.
2️⃣. *Stiffness*: Joint stiffness, especially in the morning or after periods of rest, is a common symptom.
3️⃣. *Swelling*: Inflammation and swelling in the affected joints can occur due to fluid buildup or tissue damage.
4️⃣. *Limited Mobility*: Arthritis can reduce joint flexibility and range of motion, making everyday activities challenging.
5️⃣. *Redness and Warmth*: Some types of arthritis can cause redness and warmth around the affected joint.

*💬Types of Arthritis:*

1️⃣. *Osteoarthritis (OA)*: The most common type, OA is a degenerative joint disease that wears down cartilage and joints over time.

💪 Common Gym Injuries & How to Prevent Them

As more people start prioritising fitness, we’re also seeing a rise in preventable gym-related injuries. In physiotherapy, the most frequent cases we manage include:

1️⃣ Lower Back Strain
Often caused by poor lifting technique or weak core stability during compound movements like deadlifts and squats.

2️⃣ Shoulder Impingement
Common in overhead pressing and benching when mobility or control is limited.

3️⃣ Knee Pain (Patellofemoral Issues)
Linked to poor squat mechanics, weak hip stabilisers, or sudden load increases.

4️⃣ Ankle Sprains
Usually from jumping, running, or unstable surfaces during functional training.

5️⃣ Tendinopathies (Achilles & Patellar)
Often a result of overuse, lack of recovery, and rapid progression in training intensity.

🔹 Why these injuries happen:
✔ Poor form and technique
✔ Sudden spikes in training load
✔ Insufficient warm-up
✔ Muscle imbalances
✔ Inadequate recovery or rest days

🔹 How to reduce your risk:
✨ Prioritise proper form
✨ Warm up with mobility + activation
✨ Increase weights gradually
✨ Strengthen stabiliser muscles
✨ Rest and recover intentionally
✨ Seek early physiotherapy when pain starts — don’t wait until it worsens

🏥 As physiotherapists, our goal is to keep you training safely.
If you’re consistently experiencing pain during or after workouts, it’s a sign your body needs assessment — not avoidance.

Stay strong, stay smart, and train safe! 💙💪

Sprain or Strain — do you know the difference?
Many gym injuries fall under these two categories, but they affect very different structures.

🔸 Sprain = Ligament injury
Caused by twisting or sudden force on a joint (commonly the ankle or wrist).
Signs: swelling, bruising, joint instability.

🔸 Strain = Muscle or tendon injury
Often from overuse, overstretching or lifting something too heavy.
Signs: muscle spasm, sharp pain, weakness.

Understanding the difference helps guide recovery, training modifications and when to seek physiotherapy.

💡 Remember:
Sprain = Ligament
Strain = Muscle/Tendon

If you’re training consistently, listen to your body and prioritise proper warm-ups, form, and load progression. Your long-term performance depends on it.

🌟 What is Sciatica? 🌟

Ever felt a sharp pain shooting from your lower back down your leg? That could be sciatica.

Sciatica isn’t a condition by itself—it’s a symptom of irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body. This nerve runs from the lower back, through the hips, buttocks, and down each leg.

👣 How it feels:

●Pain that travels down one leg
●Tingling sensation or “pins and needles”
●Numbness or weakness in the leg
●Pain that worsens when you sit for long or when you cough/sneeze
●Burning sensation in the foot

💡 Did you know?

Most people with sciatica improve with conservative care such as physiotherapy, exercise, and lifestyle changes. Early treatment can prevent long-term issues and restore normal mobility.

🔹 Understanding the “Spondys” of the Spine

In spine health, you’ll often hear the term “spondy-”, which comes from the Greek word spondylos meaning vertebra. But not all “spondys” mean the same thing. Each points to a very specific condition affecting the spinal column:

✅ Spondylosis – Age-related “wear and tear” of the spine. Think of it as spinal arthritis, leading to stiffness, pain, and sometimes nerve compression.

✅ Spondylitis – Inflammation of the vertebrae, most commonly seen in conditions like Ankylosing Spondylitis. It causes persistent back stiffness (especially in the morning), and in severe cases, fusion of the spine.

✅ Spondylolysis – A stress fracture in part of the vertebra, often affecting young athletes. It may cause localized low back pain that worsens with activity.

✅ Spondylolisthesis – When one vertebra slips forward over the one below it. This can irritate nerves, leading to back pain, leg pain, or sciatica.

💡 Why does this matter?
Early recognition is key. While the names sound similar, each “spondy” requires a different approach to treatment — from physiotherapy and exercise rehabilitation, to medical management or in rare cases, surgery.

As physiotherapists, we play a crucial role in:

*Pain management
*Restoring mobility
*Preventing progression
*Empowering patients with movement strategies tailored to their condition

📢 At Flexfit Physio, we believe that knowledge is the first step toward recovery. If you’ve been told you have a “spondy,” remember: understanding which one it is makes all the difference in your journey to restoring, recovering, and reviving your spine health.
